View Full Version : LED lamp interference

I built a LED reading lamp for Mom.
Used a 110v mini spot light I got from Amazon.
It worked great.....Except........
Mom has digital hearing aids.
They tell you when the batteries are low, if one aid falls out, if something is wrong with it.
Fancy and expensive.
When she turned on the lamp the aid would talk to her.
Looked on the web and found out that LED lamps can interfere with radio waves.
Who would have thought......

abunaitoo, When I fired up the big EDM machine at work in High Frequency polishing mode or roughing on full power cell phones radios and beepers went down and didnt work while it was running. They finally put a fence cage around it to keep it from interferening with the companys repeater and beepers in the tool room. Electric and the various frequencies can be interesting on what it affects, and how far it does.

Put ferrite chokes on the lamp power cable, might help some. The culprit is the power supply and not the led itself.

Most is power supply. When I worked on TV's, they had capacitors to even out DC and chokes everywhere.
Worst was car radios that picked up alternator whine and spark plug noise. I had to install coils, etc.
Even the brand of spark plug was important, Never could use Champion in a Chevy or the radio went nuts.
Diodes work on DC so filtering might be lacking in the lamp. You have AC pulses.

A friend of mine had problems with his garage door opener not opening. Long story short, after changing out the led lights in the garage all was fine.

I have installed LED lights on my presses to make powder levels more obvious to old eyes. Of course, I used the "cheap" China made lights with a simple transformer power supply.
I haven't noticed any erratic use of my older RF connected powder scale/dispenser. Is that something I should worry about, and what should I expect to see if present?

I don't think so. Seems to be a cleaner light with less flicker then fluorescent. It might mean who made it in the end. Taxes and regulations made our companies bail with the technology. We gave it to China. They are on par with us and even better. Now we depend on Russia to get to space. What, are they stupid? I needed a puller and found one. Had polish writing on it but at the bottom, made in Chinah. Polish of course. It worked. Just got a carb for a Weed Eater from China, perfect. $13, free shipping. I can't buy a kit for that.
Yes they make most for us cheap and millions are out of work here but it is government.
My Smithy is made in China. You can't get cheap here because of taxes and regs. Ford ran to Mexico and I have a Samsung fridge made in Mexico. Why do companies shy away from the states? Cheap labor? Not so much, Obamacare and taxes. Look at Apple in Ireland now.
Wallmart is going to lay off 7000 older employees. Too much perks that Obama can't cover.
I don't like to get political here but truth is what it is. Hillary for pres? WORSE!

I have had too many products made here with warranties not Upheld. GE for one. Suck a boars hind teat. They want more for extended warranties but when have you got what is right?
I like products from China. Our companies took it there when workers here could do it. Unions and demoncrats took it away.

They play havoc with electronic powder scales too !

My friend brought me 4' led shop lights that will blow your eyes out. They are made in Taiwan. $29 each. Would I pay over $100 for them made here? Not hardly on SS. You will find very few things not made in China today. We have millions out of work that can do it.
Who do you see in construction and cement work. Mexicans. I had gutters put up, Mexicans and they did a great job. get a fence put up and Mexicans will do it. Our people will not work when they live free. Why did I work so hard all my life?

The harder the job at the casino the prouder I was of getting it done on or before schedule. And I took on some doozies when I worked there! Like totally rewiring the data collection closet, adding lightning protection... I brought it on on time and under the budget I set. Personal challenges to do the absolute best job I could given what I had to work with(at the casino the technology lagged 25 years for data collection... like RS-232 in the slots and that was converted to RS-422 for long runs across the casino floor)

I have replaced several light bulbs in my house.
I listen to AM radio much of the time.
Some of the LED light bulbs emit enough RF to make a bunch of noise on the AM radio.
The worst offender are some LED bulbs (with candelabra base) in my ceiling fan light fixture.

Send the thing back. It's in violation of FCC emission standards and interferes with a medical device.
also, watch out for the dope cops:

So... could this be the answer to Hillary using the earpiece? A constant screech might jumble up some answers... worse than usual, I mean.

I'm assuming, dangerous I know, that the output voltage of the power supply is less than 5V DC. If you can get into the unit add a couple of 0.1 uF ( micro farad) caps to the output of the power supply. Use a mylar cap as it doesn't have a + or - to it in regard to polarity. If you have the space also put one right at the lamp socket. that should go a long way to killing the noise. If it is still there wrap the power supply box , so you don't sort anything out, in aluminum foil. Make sure the foil is in close contact with the power cord in and out. You've made a Faraday cage should stop all interference. Watch out for overheating. Let us know how things work out.

Should be hooked to a lightning rod.

I makes all the difference in the world.
it's wireless, just put it near your AM radio.
