runfiverun i guess i am to new to the 45-70, what do you mean by look at the base i may want to run a card? i have been told the 1-14 twist lends it self to the lighter bullet. my sholder sure does at least. this is a 23 in barrel.

a nother question. i have shoe 1000s of cast in 45 act and 38 spl also hot 357 mag. they were lubed with hard lube. i have never had a leading problume. for my 45-70 i am guessing 1000-1800 fps. will hard lube be ok? i have found zambesy lube from ruster bright to have very little smoke which is good for action shooting.

is there any of you that use hard lube for the 45-70 .

still looking for what would be better 300 or 340 gr rn fp gc magma bullet mold to get.

thanks charles

magma molds are mostly made for commercial casters which is good for the longevity
and quality it is also bad because their designs are for high speed casting.
i am not saying that they don,t work........i have at least a dozen of their molds.
but their bases are usually beveled to accomodate dropping from the mold, not to seal the bore.
hence the under card...
i would go ahead and try your lube, i use a hard lube also and have gone over 2300 fps
in a couple of my rifles with no problems.
i have also had leading in my 375 win at 1700 fps but this was a composition problem not a boolit design problem.

if you are using a master-caster don't be afraid to use a lyman or rcbs mold and have it fitted to your caster..

MAGMA ALSO HAS A 300GR AND 340 GR BOTH RN FP GC. GAS CHECK. THAT IS THE 2 MOLDS I AM TALKING ABOUT GETTING ONE OF. DO YOU THINK the 300 or 340 would be best in the 1-14 twist rifle barrel ? thanks

Most like the Hornady's crimp on style.

Why is it you want a gas check bullet for in 45-70?
If you're planning to shoot 1-20 alloy for expansion. You may want to check with Magma to see if the gas check will fit with that alloy. Since most of their dies are cut to size using 2/6 alloy. Short of using soft alloy with heavy powder charges I can't see a use for a gas check in a 45-70. Similar to pistol cartridges. Shoot a Magma 45-70-325 FPD FB at 1,550 fps and I'll bet it will kick hard enough for you in a light rifle. Remember the black powder shoots a 405gr bullet at 1,250 fps.

sorry
i totally missed the g/c part..
the 340 would be adequate in the 14 twist. but at that diameter 40 grains boolit weight
wont make much difference in length.
nor in their stabilization..

i would use the hornady check..

some one made me put on my thinking hat on. the faster twist 1-14" would be better for 405-500gr. and the reg. 1-20" is better for 300-350 gr. my tc has a fast twist 1-14" . i am leaning for the magma 340 gr rn fp gc bullet mold. only because of the gas check. i thought if i wanted a soft bullet for hunting the gas check would be needed. i do like there plain base bullets. i have never had a problum with useing gc bullets with out the gc on. i need more help to get me going. thanks

The 14" twist actually lends itself to the heavier bullets but it will be fine with 300-340 gr bullets at the velocity your going to be using. Either make of GC is fine as they both (the new Lymans) crimp on. I'd try 4759 and 2400. I've having good results with both powders with the RCBS 300 gr GC bullet. Start down around 25 gr and work to about 35 gr with both powders. I use a dacron filler with the 4759.
