Any recommendations for my first rifle bullet mold? I want a plain base/powder coated bullet for hunting deer/hogs and target shooting with .30-30 and .308.

I think I need a flat-nose bullet around 160-190grs. I hope to be able to get decent accuracy somewhere over 1600 fps. Is that realistic with one bullet for both calibers?

From reading here, it seems I want something that casts at least .311". My lead is mostly wheel weights.

I would prefer a double- or triple-cavity iron mold.

Am I anywhere near the right track here?

I think getting good accuracy with a plainbased bullet at 1600 fps is optimistic.

You will have better results with a load which approximates .32-40 Winchester payload and velocity. I use the Accurate 31-155D bullet in the .30-30 and .30-06. I use 1:30 tin-lead from Roto Metals and 5 grains of Bullseye for small game in either caliber and a charge of 4198 to approximate 1400 fps for woods deer hunting. For a heavier load try a slower powder like 4064, RL15 or Varget, about 50% of a jacketed charge with 1 grain Dacron fill for your 1600 fps and you may get lucky.

Suggest the Lyman 311041, Lee 309-170 FP, RCBS 30-180 FP or NOE 311-165 RD. All are of gas check design and shoot good with regular lube or BLL.

I use 31-142C PB in BO @ 2100 fps. Working on 31-174C (Marlin 336 RD style) in 30/30. Haven't gotten to push it faster than 1300 so far. Hopefully I'll test this week. Accurate makes Al, iron or brass, fast delivery.

Since the Cast/Rifle thing is new to you, I'd recommend using a GC. A GC will improve your chances for easy success, maybe start out with the Lee C309-170-F.

The one I bought new in 2011, casts a boolit that's .311

That 170gr Lee is a great boolit and has proven accurate for us in several 30 caliber rifles.
