I've never shot cast bullets and want to buy some hard cast heavy weight cast bullets for a new Henry .41 Magnum I just bought. I see Montana Bullet Works gives a choice of .410, .411, or .412 diameter for the .41 Magnum. I think understand I should slug my barrel and buy bullets .001 over my barrel size. However, I'm not comfortable with slugging my barrel -- so -- if I just buy a small amount (100) of .411 gas checked bullets, would that be a waste of time and money without slugging the barrel?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have a 41 Henry, but haven't shot gas checked boolits in it. Tried to shoot Lyman molds 41032 & 410459, but had problems with both with loading in rifle barrel. Contacted Accurate Molds & owner suggested mold 41-210A Plain Base for lever action. Purchased a 3 cavity in 413 diameter & size them down to 411 & 412. Both sizes run in my gun and are accurate.

You won't know until you pull the trigger. If they chamber easily they are not too large. If they shoot well they are not too small. Let us know how it works out.

You've already done that buying a 41 MAG so what is a few more dollars?:bigsmyl2:

That's not very nice. The 41 Rem Mag is an excellent cartridge.

I think that Roysha was just joking.

And yes, I agree the 41 is a GREAT cartridge. Unfortunately my only 41 is my old police issue Model 58 S&W which rode with me daily for several years. I should get a carbine in the calibre someday.

I'm a big fan of 41 mag. I haven't handled a 41 Henry yet, but from what I've read, .411 will be the size you want to buy. Also look for a RNFP style bullet. I use the Ranch Dog TLC-411-255 RF in my Marlin with great success...I know it's apples and oranges, but I've heard that the Henry isn't fond SWC style bullets.

Get the 411's and give it a go! Should be fine.

.411 would be the size to start with. I have not had much luck accuracy wise with any cast bullet yet. All the bullets that I have tried, with the exception of the Ranch Dog 411-255, have fed and chambered just fine.

I've been shooting .411" sized boolits out of my Henry. They work just fine and accuracy is top notch. Order the .411" boolits and give it a whirl.

I have run SWC's through my Henry with absolutely no problems. Also RNFP and TCFB work great.

JonB,

Yes and no... I tried SWC's in my .44 Henry in the .44 Mag loading, and the physics of the cartridge wouldn't allow it to feed.
The edge of the bullet would catch somewhere, and it would jam.
Loading the same 429421 in .44 SPL cases, and the length was about 1/8" shorter, and it fed just fine.
I had the same issue in my Taurus Thunderbolt: Full length SWC's wouldn't feed, so I had to use the RNFP bullet.
THAT feeds SLICK!
Unless you run .41 SPL cases in the rifle, I'd probably go with a RNFP there, too.

I've had pretty good luck with WFN and LFN bullets in a Marlin which is a little balky with LSWC's. Beartooth Bullets has a pretty good selection of heavy gas checked bullets too, might want to give them a try.

There was a group buy on a MP mold a few years ago that cast about 215grs that a couple of people had used on deer with great effect...

I've run over 500 SWC through my Henry .41 without a single issue and excellent accuracy. I've been using the Acme 210gr HiTec coated SWC's.

There is also pressure sizing boolit to fit the bore, *if* the alloy is not too hard, so don't overlook this fine aspect of shooting a magnum velocity/magnum pressure round. In a revolver, a boolit BHN 15 or less will easily leave the cylinder obturated to throat diameter, same thing in the Henry rifle over a full house load of slow burning powder.
