Saturday morning, on the way home from the local farmer's market, my wife and I stopped by a whole-house estate sale. Wife was looking to pick up some gardening supplies on the cheap and I was just tagging along to carry her plunder.
No sooner had I walked into the garage that I spotted a very nice cast-iron ladle...about a 2-pounder...that was actually tagged as a "bullet melter." Under the table the ladle was on sat an old two-burner "gas ring" (also cast iron) complete with connection fittings. Got the ladle for $2, the stove for $5, along with 2 pounds of canning paraffin (casting flux and lube base) for $.50. Wife walked away empty-handed.
Spent this morning cleaning the stove and connecting it to the gas line in my workshop...and this afternoon smelting down all my modest accumulation of range scrap and wheelweights. Ended up with 72# of my "basic" alloy cast in 1# ingots. Not too shabby...huh?
