Hi, I've been thinking lately on this subject and wanted to know who here has done it with a 1:9 twist 16" barrel? Good idea or not?

Do some searching on this site and on the Internet. There is plenty of information on exactly what you are asking. In a nutshell, of course it can be, and is being done.

556 chamber with long shoulder in a ATI Omni Hybrid AR 1-9 rifle gas .
FC 223 Brass
CCI 41
H322 21.0
NOE 225-55 @ .2255 and 63 gr
Hornady copper check
Modified Darrs lube
75/25 WW /1-20 from tamper seals
Water quinched from the mould
Shoots 2+ inches from the 16" bbl @ 100 yd . Jacketed ammo runs 55 fmj 3200 and about 3" @ 100 . Best guess is that the cast is running 25-2600 fps .

The downside of the above is that I only have 150 or so down range .

1-9 and 1-8 and 1-12 and another 1-9.
you didn't ask but I might as well throw the 22-250 and both 220 swifts in too.
the first 2 and the 4th are all AR type rifles, I just happen to use the same load in all of them.

You're close: Quickload estimates it going approx. 2447fps.

So I won't clog up the gas system or anything crazy like that? I have some carnuba red kicking around, would only need a mold and gas checks basically

I was at the range a couple weeks ago, and posted some preliminary test results to cycle the action, see post #44

There's a small hole in the barrel. It matches up to small hole in gas block. There is a tube from the gas block to the bolt carrier group. Ta da. The mighty "gas system". Even if you managed to clog it, it's nothing to take it apart and clean.

Use gas checks, even if you powder coat the bullets. Otherwise you will eventually get to clean the lead out of the gas system.

The gas tube isn't where it builds up; it builds up in the bolt carrier between the bolt tail and gas rings. It is kind of a pain to clean out of there when the buildup gets bad.

The one exception to needing gas checks is light subsonic loads with powder coated bullets; the pressure usually isn't high enough to cut through the coating as the bullet passes the gas port. Lots of us run cast subsonic bullets in 300 Blackout, powder coated and plain base; that works well.
