View Full Version : Linotype Deal or not ?

A couple months back I was offered 2000 lbs of linotype at $.65 to $.75 per pound. Is this a good deal or a waste of money. Will it make a harder alloy when mixed with wheel weights? I'm not sure if it is still available. It's at a small scrap yard. Would $1000.00 be an insult to this guy, or should I pay his price?

Thanks for any help.

His price at 65 cents a pound is below market. 50 cents a pound is half of what the stuff historically goes for, but you are buying a large quantity. I see no insult in the offer. Worst case, pay him the 65 cents.

Yes and yes. A very good price and it's possibly the best bet for hardening any softer lead. BUT you have to be sure it's the real deal. It should look like this;

I paid $1.50/lb. recently for lino in ingot form, and a delivered price of $1.65 for 40 lbs. from an ebay source, still in the original pigs,(cut up so it could be shipped). My reason is I have over a half ton of nearly pure lead from on old counter weight from a machine tool.

My mix is 17/3 soft lead to lino, gives me a very good boolit metal for my handgun boolits. Air cooled, they come out at 13-15 BHN, after 6 weeks they get to 18-20.

$1000 especially if you have cash, is no insult at all. There is something magic about a wad of cash. :-D As previously stated, the worst scenario is that he says no. The price per pound is one thing but a 2000 pond lot, well thats different.

East central Mississippi. Meridian is nearest town.

Remember you are saving him the trouble of hauling it. I would offer just below market value (5 or 10 cents)because you are saving him the trouble and you can always, raise the offer if he says no.

In fact, I would buy 20-40 lbs if you decide you have too much(@ $1.50/lbs) Last time I bought Lino it looked just like printer press type even had the letters and numbers on some.

Anything under $1.00 a lb would be a decent price these days. You'd be able to recoup some of your money selling any extra you don't want/need.

If he gets a ton for 1K he can get his whole nut back with just a little bit of work selling off half. Then he can brag to all of us for the next couple years about the thousand pounds of lino he got for free...

I talked to the owner of the scrap yard today. He was at home recuperating from surgery.
He said he would take my offer of $1,000.00, but he wouldn't be able to dig it out until next week. Next week I'll be gone to work for two weeks. It will be 3 weeks from tomorrow before I can get it. That is, if it becomes a deal. I'll let you know then. I'm more into this for fun than for profit. I don't know how much lino I'll need in a lifetime, but if this deal pans out and any of you want some, cover my cost I'll keep 250 to 300 lbs.

You won't have a problem selling the unwanted portion.

... This Wednesday, I picked up 167 lbs for a friend at a scrap yard in Jersey for 60 cents/lb. Also got 197 lbs of sheet lead that is pure for the same price

Shoot me a message when you make the pick up. there's a good chance that, at $.60/# I might make the trip to your house to get 1,000 pounds. The price of diesel would add about $160 to me coming to Meridian from Baton Rouge. that would still be around $.75/# for me. If it's the real deal, I could probably even go $.65/# and still feel good about that big of an outlay.

I checked on this deal yesterday, the owner of the scrap yard hasn't uncovered it yet. Hopefully he will get it out in the next week or so. I'll let you all know as soon as I can.

Id jump on it for that price and would probably jump on it for a buck a lb. Lineotype is getting about impossible to find up here in my rural area. Ive boughten about all of it anyone had. Last year i drove 450 miles round trip to pick up 2000 lbs at 65 cents a lb. and would do it again tommarow if I could find it at that price.
