Can't find any info on this mould. Is it for a 38 special? What grain bullet does it throw? Any information is appreciated.

Thanks,

Looks like a 358529 hp. Keith boolit designed for .38 special/,357. You have a dandy if slow casting mold there.

Yeah, you have a good one there. I have a 358429 that has a .125" HP pin that I fitted for use in my Marlin carbine at higher velocities that drops bullets at 171 grains ready to load. I have two of the older 358439s which was the original Ideal number that drop bullets ready to load at 156 grains. It is a great .38 Special bullet./beagle

Are my eyes deceiving me or is that mold stamped 356439? I agree it should be 358439, the hollow point version of the standard Kieth bullet, with a nominal weight of 160 grains.

Not a mold for high production, but it should be a good bullet for expansion. Cast a few measure the diameter and weight.

A VERY VERY slow casting mold. Hope you have a lot of time on your hands. I only cast HP's in 5 cavity modern brass molds like MiHec makes. As fast a non-HP multi-cavity molds! Good boolits rain out of those molds.

Yes the original was the 358439 next was the 358429 HP. IIRC, the 439 had a deeper thinner HP. When I got a replacement factory pin it was 0.155" diameter. You can get the 358429 work up your loads and use the hp for hunting. You only need to cast a few dozen each year.

it does say 356439, at least that's what I see.
what weight you get from it will depend on the molds specifics, the pin depth, and your alloy.
probably around 150grs though.

The number is 358. The 8 is poorly struck and looks like a 6. Core pin is .155.

Thank you all for your help.

I just got done casting with a .38 Special hollow-point. It is a 358446 that was hollow-pointed by Eric. Very slow to cast with, but great bullets. I cast 425 of them in 4-1/2 hours. Very accurate bullet.

I also have a 358156-GC that was hollow-pointed from the Lyman factory. Same comments about it. Very accurate and very slow to cast with. I don't use either of them for pinking.

What is the proper procedure for using this mold? My guess after the lead has cooled twist the core pin and remove. Cut the sprue and open the mold. Eject the bullet by tapping the mold handle. Have a S&W chief's special that might like this bullet and want to give it a try soon.

Thank you

That's pretty much the way I do it. The trick is the pin has to be hot and stay hot.

A stuck pin is no fun if you have already cut the sprue, then the boolit just wants to spin in the blocks. BTDT, now I pull the pin before cutting the sprue.
