Sm. Plumbers Furnace, Anyone use one? Thoughts?

Picked this up at a flea market last week. BernzoMatic, basically looks like one of their old handheld propane torches, but with a few twists, turns, stands, brackets, etc. Has anyone used one of these? Guy I got it off says he uses one for casting. He got an adapter fitting to go to a 20 lb bottle.
Thoughts, ideas?
Yeah, I gotta clean up the bench.
Also, any ideas for the rust in the pot?

I have one that the burner screws onto the top of a 20lb. tank. I use it for smelting and making ingots. I don't think what you have would be too convenient for casting bullets.

Mine uses white gas. Temp control is not good enough for casting. But, it will melt down a lot of lead in a hurry.

Bernzomatic made lots of things like that, as a kid we had a camp stove that looked almost like that just a little shorter. I imagine it would work but will be slow and if using small cylinders expensive. Are you planning on smelting small batches or casting, or both?
Cleaning up that pot is no real problem, I'd just lightly wire brush or sand with coarse sand paper to knock off the loose stuff and then melt away.

Looks promising to me, for smelting small batches only... Unfortunately that pot won't accept some of the bigger chunks of scrap you may encounter. I would definitely invest in a bulk tank adaptor because I would bet the little tanks will not only run out quickly, but probably right at the worst time as well. It's Murphy's Law!

This is what I use, connect to 20-lb. tank, high pressure regulator, makes short work of range scrap and wheelweights.

You will have absolutly ZERO temp control for casting! Forget it. Use it for re-melting WW's and scrap lead into ingots.

Much lower temp and smaller than the "jet engine" 150# plumber's furnace I use, but it will probably get hot enough to melt small quantities of Pb given enough time. It will use a ton of those little teeny bottles! Better convert it to a standard propane fitting so you can use 20 or 100# cylinders.

I've rendered at least a ton of wheel weights with a pot that size! I had used mine on a propane coleman stove, though. You'll probably need a wind screen around the pot. Also, that "ladle" is too short to keep your hands away from the heat. Maybe you can fix up a longer handle for it.

You will most likely need to refill the propane bottle you have as the Bernz holder and the new tanks are a tight fit. The weld seam on the new tanks is larger in dia than the older heavyer tanks or you will need to grind down the sharp edge. I have a lantern and stove by Bernz of the same style of tank mounting.

If you plan on using that thing, you would MUCH better off to just buy the simple conversion fitting to allow you to use a hose to a 20# tank. I have several "refill" fitting (cheap HF to VERY expensive pro version) for those stupid little bottles and everytime I tried it the tank valve leaks and all gas was lost over time. That was on 5 different brands of tanks. Spend your money on the conversion fitting and NOT the refill fitting. They rarely ever work. And you will probably have the tank size problem as mentioned above.

Do the right thing and convert it to a hose. You will not be sorry.
