I am looking for a hunting load for my 416 Taylor using RCBS 416-350-FN. I have looked at BW's 416 Taylor website, but can't find what I need. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Not much help with the RCBS boolit as I didnt have it yet when I worked out these loads for a customer, but might help spark some ideas.
Case - WW 458
bullet - NEI 400 DD GC @ BHN-20
primer - Fed - 215 lrm
powder - 62gn AA # 2520 moderate pressure
unformed cases - 1957 average fps formed cases - 1982 -average fps @35F
other load (ideas)
case - WW
bullet - 410gn Woodleigh weld core
primer - Fed 215 lrm

Might be better than no help at all, or not

I tried a couple of loads in my 416 Taylor the other day, mostly just to blow out the cases and with that thought, I used two powders that I had the most of... AA-2230C and Varget. I wanted to be safe as I had no defined load data for these powders in the cartridge, so I started low.

Well, 55.5 gns of AA-2230C did a good good of blowing out the cases (458 Win Mag), but grouped eratically around 6" at 75 yards. This is a ball powder and it probably did not burn very evenly due to the reduced loading density. The cases were sooty the first inch or so and the chrono ran from 1857 to 1887.

55.5 gns of Varget was just the opposite with 1.5" groups and steadier 1812 to 1820 fps. While this load shot much better, I suspect a slower, bulkier powder, ie...AA-5744, may offer even better results. I will see if I can pick some up at the next gun show.

None the less... shooting cast boolits in a 416 Taylor is loads of FUN!!

Be carefull there brother, 5744 is not slower than Varget. That 5744 will chart alongside 4227 more likely.

BullShop,

Thanks for the heads up. According to Accurate Powders tech line I can use these AA-5744 loasds with my 350 gn cast bullet.

26.0 gns --- 1250 - 1350 fps
32.0 gns --- 1450 - 1550 fps
40.0 gns --- 1850 - 1950 fps

Thanks for you response. I'll bet you have a larger need for these type rounds in your area!
