I shot my hungrian steyr(rifle) not the carbine. it has a long eye relieft scope on it. my bullet's are some 220 gr. with GC's. accurate number 9 works pretty good(about 18 gr's) and Red dot works better. I 'm thinking 16 gr's of RD is the most accurate load with the 220 gr. bullet. I'll be trying 15, 15.5, 16, 16.5 and maybe 17'gr's of RD next. H-4198 works pretty good but it has a lot of "blow-back", I'm thinking these loads need a faster hotter powder to seal the neck to the chamberl I slugged my barrel and it came out .327. the bullet are right at .330. I have several carbines and I'll be trying these loads with them soon. right now i feel a nap attack coming on and yes, the primers where kinda flat! the brass is boxer primer NYY or something like that.
1/2 in. groups at 25 yards the open up at 50 yards. to about 2 inches.

that seems like an awful lot of red-dot.
'the load' [13grs] in a 30 cal rifle with a 170gr boolit produces 45-k psi.

Good for you! I hope you find what works. I had the carbine version for several years. Fine rifles if you get a good one.

.............So you have the full length rifle. I take it you slugged the barrel as you mentioned that you had and it, "came out .327". I'll admit to having no experience with the full length rifle, but a considerable amount with the Stuzens and carbines. A .327" groove sounds mighty tight to me. Considering that the 1938 Ammo I have on had has a .329" od jacketed slug. My all matching carbine has a .332" groove and a Stutzen short rifle has a .331" groove.

"...........my bullet's are some 220 gr. with GC's." What boolits would those be, and what are you sizing them to? The 8x56 cartridge can be loaded with any load shown for the 8x57, cast or jacketed.

This is my all matching carbine with a .332" groove. Sure would like to help, but would need a bit more definitive information. Muzzle's in good shape? Bore looks like................? Both of mine will accept and chamber a cartridge with a .338" cast slug seated. What's yours like?

I do have the hornady .330 bullets of 205 gr. but at the age of 75 I'm not into recoil any more. I want the lightest recoil load I can get with some accuracy . and yes, I could load up some jacketed bullets with a full load of 4895 and i'm sure they would be accurate, but about 3-5 of them would be the end of my day shooting. that's why I started shooting lead bullets. 4198 is a good powder also any thing over 21gr's will work fine. I shoot lead in my 7.62x39 upper's for AR's, my 6.8 Ar's, my 56-50 spencer and my .45 henry and a few other cowboy guns.

Hi Buckshot,I also shoot the stutzen wit a lee.338 cast, with very good results, with that boolit it makes for a reasonable chamber case neck fit, so blow by is very minimal if any at all,I'm just in the process of drill/tap the left side for the reciver sight, made one into a reduced- rim .45/70, so ican use the charger with 4 ctgs.

It'sbeen awhile, but I did swage down .338 jacketed bullets and used the red dot 13grain recipe. Very mild.

You're putting words into my mouth. I said nothing about "a full load of 4895." H4895 can be downloaded safely and is one of the most consistent performers I have found. Take a look at:
