Will this item work for casting purposes? What else would I have to buy?

Here is a thread with a picture of what's needed to build a complete unit: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?181319-Pid-Controller-Schematic

I have not used the Mypin PID's as I got all my parts from auberins.com because of my one stop shopping preference as well as the ability of getting tech support, if needed. My 2 units are built with their SYL-2362 PID's and I found them easy to program and reliable after quite a few years of use.

You should be able to get a Mypin TA4 on fleabay with SSR and probe for that price. Watch to be sure you don't get a RNR, you'll want the SNR or SRR versions of the Mypin.
But I'm happy with my two Mypins. I have one Aubur as well, but they all work fine. If you have the space in your mounting box, the TA7 is even easier to read ('just a bigger version of the TA4)

That is an overkill for a simple on-off pot control. It has 4-20 madc analog output which you will never use. Along with relay out. And the program functions are way more than you will ever need.

Stick with the brands most on here use. That way when you get lost, you can ask questions about existing units people have used.

Banger...who's the contact here in the forum for purchase of one of these gizmos?

I say this in a kind way. If you are asking what parts need to be purchased just buy a complete unit from one of the members here. I see people asking electrical questions all the time and it scares me. IMO if you can't read a wiring diagram let someone else do it. A PID setup is extremely easy to make so there really shouldn't be any questions about it.

From what I have seen in the MANY threads on here, MyPin and Auber seem to be the units of choice. Do an internet search for purchasing sources. I have no idea who, if anyone, sells them on here.

I do not use digital controllers on my pots, but I design and sell sophisticated control systems that use high-end ($500-1200) 1/2 and full DIN size controllers that use the full 4-20 madc proportional/ramp&soak/timer/digital comms outputs to contol big proportional SCR packs, speed, level, temp, flow, pressure, etc for industrial applications. Industrial apps rarely use simple on-off functions as they are not accurate enough for many needs. Hi-temp monitors use on-off many times for simple alarming.

There's more than one fellow on here that sells em, but I only noticed one in the Vendor Sponsors section.
He's been sellin' em on here a while though. 'Must be good at it. :-)

I bought my first one from "He who must not be named" on here and then I built the next two.

Thank you Beagle...that's the one I want.

He's still around on other boards. I bought one from him as well. Saved me the time of putting it together and for the cost I wondered how he made money. It's a really nice unit IMO.

I enjoyed building my two. I look at wiring like plumbing except if there is an overlooked wire somewhere you don't have electrons coming out of it like you would have water coming out of a pipe.

MGread made mine, but I understand he is quite ill and out of it for awhile. I think OBI makes them too for sale.
