Someone I know uses the coated 110 grain RN (30 Carbine) bullet in the 30-30 and 30 Herrett for deer under limited conditions.

I have pushed the soupcan to 2105 fps out of the Herrett and I would think cast from ACWWs it would far out perform the before mentioned bullet at reasonable ranges and ONLY rib shots.

Any opinions or better yet real world experiences to relate??

A 22 short is deadly if you can put one in the earhole every time. It is the shots that you have to pass up that would make me go with a 150 gr even if I gave up some accuracy. Gianni.

Very well said.

TC, If you want to use the soup can, and it sounds like you do, try it for penetration with 5 or 6 milk jugs full of water or if you are out in the sticks loaded down to what your velocity should be at 150 yds try it with 5 or 6 big cans of tomatoes taped together with 1/4" plywood circles in between the cans. If it shoots straight and penetrates at least 5 or either it should be ok for what you want. 150 gr 30 cal @1500 fps go through all of these and leave an exit wound on our local whiteetail. Gianni.

Lee 120gr FNGC (1/2 Lino-1/2 pure or all lino) in .30-30, OAL 2.35", 29.5gr of RE7, crimped. "Book velocity" 2700fps, minimal leading, 2" 5-shot groupa @ 100yds in Win 94AE. IF you are SURE of a boiler room shot, this load has dropped 5 deer. Longest shot was about 125yds, closest about 30yds, all one shot kills, including a 170lb buck. Lighter bullets give flatter trajectories, but you have to be willing to pass up marginal shots, (broadside only) as I wouldn't trust it to work quartering or hitting major bones.
Lee 150 gr FNGC (1/2&1/2), OAL 2.45", 21.1gr of RE7, crimped, at est. MV of 1900 performs nicely, too. A little less range, a little more oomph. This one has put a few in the freezer, and more guys I load for seem to prefer it, although it doesn't seem to be quite as accurate, it has worked well.
I am not personally a big fan of using anything heavier in the .30-30, as the trajectory is too much like that of a baseball, but I am aware that there are a lot of heavy bullet fans that have great results.
One friend has been testing the 120gr (lino) in his .30 Herrett, likes the accuracy, but hasn't shot anything but paper with it so far. If he gets lucky, we'll see how it performs.
