I have a Lyman 311644 boolit mold that I want to sell. The Lyman site shows it as having a tapered lead up from bore-rider to first driving band - but my mold also has a couple of crud-catcher (technical term) grooves at the nose of the boolit. See the picture. What gives?

they changed it.[shrug]
I have different iterations of a few lyman mold numbers.

I have the same mold and use it often in my .30'06 for target work. The crud-catchers are actually lube rings for extra lube in hi vel loads.

I also have the same mold. Shoots good if I keep the velocities down to about 1900 FPS. I think the nose rivets when shot faster and that might be why Lyman changed the design.

The original purpose of those rings was to allow the application of lube to the "bore-riding " portion of the boolit. The thought was that regular lube on the body of the boolit would not be sufficient to keep the boolit from leading. The extra lube would help alleviate that problem. The 46th Edition Lyman Handbook has an article on the design of these boolits by the designer. He had a 270 boolit and a 22 boolit design as well, and I think also a 7mm design, though I am not sure about that.

The designer definitely made it in a 6.5 cal, too. I have that one, also.

The article in question is on pp 122-124 in Lyman #47.
