Some say I'm outdated but I still like the Weatherby Mark V rifles
Shiny stocks and deep polished blueing has always been my favorite.
Not real conducive to not being seen though.
I'm window shopping if anyone wants to know.

When I was a kid that was the most fancy rifle you could get that wasn't custom.

I've always thought they were gorgeous rifles.

My favorite rifle is my Mark V 9 lug 30-06 !
It's a tad heavy, but she's a shooter !
It's the one rifle I own that's going to my grave with me.
She shoots sub one inch groups with just about every handload I have ever tried in her.
She still has her original Weatherby 3-9x scope with some kind of adjustable bases.
I can't even begin to count the number of critters that have fallen to her.
I guess I'm outdated as well, but what a club to be a part of !

I have a 30-378 that is a tack driver. Muzzle brake is a killer though.

Duke I remember dad always wanted to own one. A close freind had one and let him use it for a couple hunts, he just never was able to get the funds to purchase. Beautiful rifles.

Duke I agree with you too. The Mark V is not only a good looking rifle, the action is super strong and makes for a strong rifle. I know they are not the same animal, but I also like the Weatherby Vanguard. I think it is because I used one to kill my first animal in South Africa in 2011. It was a nice Kudu at 350-400 yards. My rifle had not made it to me yet due to airline flub-up, so when the time came the guide handed me his Vanguard in 30-06. I had never even touched the rifle much less shot it. I said where do I aim? He said just put it on the shoulder. As that big Cape Kudu hit the dirt from one well placed shot I knew I had to have one. I used my rifle, a Mark V in 300 Weatherby to shoot the next four animals. Score ended up being five shots, and five animals. Not bragging on my shooting, but on the great Weatherby rifles. So Duke, I say shop on!

I have a Vanguard on 223. It shoots sub 1" groups with ANYTHING. My handload are sub 1/2" groups. You ain't gettin' my bolt gun!
BTW the Weatherby was ans still is a copy of the 98 Mauser. The strongest standard action ever devised. A gunsmith friend tried to blow one up. A FULL case of Bullseye under a 150 gr bullet in a 30-06 chamber 98. Most of the case went down the barrel. Stripped the rifling but was still functional. He did it with a battlefield pickup that was pitted so bad it was of no value. Rebarreled to 06 and fired. You can't beat success.

Every Weatherby that I have ever shot was accurate. I especially liked the 26" Mark V in .270 Weatherby that I had.
I have moved away from belted magnums in the last few years, but I could make an exception for another Mark V.

I at one time owned a Mark V deluxe in 270 WM. I didnt own it long, because i was young and didnt know what i had. It was very nice however, I gave 875 or so for it.
One of the best that you could buy from over the counter and go to the field with.

I've never heard of an inaccurate Mark V, and the .300 Weatherby is my favorite big-game type cartridge.

I never was thrilled with the look but ive got a mark V standard (no tip or skip line checkering) in 240 wby that is one of if not my favorite long range white tail rifle.

remember the loan deal they used to do for you? I always wanted to get one of those rifles but never went thru with the deal. I believe it was an ok investment! The only hang up I have with them is their weight, a tad heavy.

Um, no. The Mark V is not a copy of the 98 Mauser.
Before he designed the Mark V, Roy Weatherby did build some rifles on Mauser actions; I think he also did some on 03 Springfields and Winchester Model 70's, but those weren't Mark V's.

Sorry but neither the Mark V or the Vanguard are copies of the great Mauser 98 other than being bolt action. Best, Thomas.

Hey Duke,
I will not only call you outdated but I will proudly join you.
I have loved the Mark V's since my brother bought one when I was a kid. He was just of of the Navy with a pocket full of cash.
I shot it many times.
Funny, I have never bought one, but I still admire them.

A friend needed $500 so he gave me his German made Mark V .240 Wby as collateral (his idea). It was beautiful, very accurate and heavy. Danged if he didnt pay me back a month later....oh well! Best,Thomas.

yup and if I remember right you could have bought a brand new mark V deluxe for 600 bucks on payments back then.

One of the best that you could buy from over the counter and go to the field with.I agree with that. I have a USA made Mark V in 257 Weatherby Magnum with the synthetic stock that has the aluminum bedding block, and it is one of the very few bolt action rifles I have ever owned that didn't need any tuning, tinkering or trigger work right out of the box. Put a 4-12x Leupold scope on it, bought a box of factory Weatherby ammo (ouch) to zero and chronograph, bought some empty brass to reload, and it is a tack driver.
I have taken deer out to 400 yards (lasered) with it using Nosler 110 gr Accubonds @ 3400fps. It has light recoil about like a 270 Winchester. Absolutely great rifle.

When I was young, I was always in awe of anyone with a Weatherby rifle. I think they are great guns and you are a lucky person to own one. Nothing wrong with owning a Weatherby anything.

Yesiree bob! Monte Carlo stock with cheek piece, skip line checkering, contrasting forearm tip, a neat white diamond inlaid in the stock and gloss on gloss. LUV UM!
Well, I have two sets of real Weatherby dies, 240 and 270, which is about as close as I'll ever come to owning a Weatherby.
My dream Weatherby was the 224 which I wanted to rebarrel to .17. Even went so far as to have a custom reamer made in 17-224 Weatherby, radius shoulders and all, just in case a 224 should drop on me from the heavens. Never happened, but I still have the reamer and a batch of brass. Dang it, now it looks like I have another project for the "Winter List" However it will probably have to be on a REM 700 since I for **** sure can't afford a Weatherby 224.

I believe the Weatherbys are still cutting edge hunting rifles.
Roy was ahead of his time.
I have the Accumark in .270 Weatherby mag.
On a side note I have never been able to handload the ammo to equal the Weatherby factory loads .
The factory 130gr Hornady spire point gets 3600 fps out of my rifle.
Weatherby is using a powder that is not available for aftermarket sale.
It looks, smells, and tastes like Norma MRP, but it is not the same powder.

Clay, are you sure about the velocity with a 130gr bullet?

Clay, are you sure about the velocity with a 130gr bullet?
That is what my chronograph read .
It is an old Oehler 33 and I have never had it give false readings or what I thought was false .
My handloads run around 3300 to 3400 . That is the best I have been able to do so far.

I had a used Mk V in 257, it was like new. A buddy of mine just had to have it,so I traded in to
him complete with Weatherby scope. He was so proud of that rifle he got to be a pain in the butt.
He would never carry it where it might get a scratch. He carried it in case to stand and back.Over
the years he lost chance on deer, because his gun was cased.
My buddy won one in .270 from my club. I've only won a ML Black Diamond at a raffle. Still------------I'm ahead of the game. Would rather have won the .270.

Duke, if you ever run across an early Kleingunther K-15 Instafire then you`ll be looking at a child of the Weatherby family. Bob Kleingunther was Roy Weatherby`s head gun smith in Germany. Bob went on his own in Seguin Tx when Weatherby moved back to Ca. In 1979 my brother had Bob make up a 7 Rem. Mag K-15 for him. No sights on it and it looked like a Mk 5 if you squinted a bit. Back then it cost $1000.00 to own one. They were guaranteed to shoot factory ammo under 1" for 5 shots at 100 yds from his shop. It took me 6 months to make up a humdinger of a load for it. It would print 3 rounds of my load into 1 single hole at 250 yds! I sent Bob all the data from my loads on every item I used. He remarked that he knew he made an accurate rifle - just really impressed him what dedicated loads can do.Robert

In the late 1950s my brother and I visited Weatherby's store in South Gate, Ca. The Mark V had come out by then and they had a catalog with great pictures and descriptions of how the rifle came about. I still have my copy. If the rifle copied any other action it was the rifle made by Buffalo Arms, complete with mutable locking lugs. The Buffalo action did have a claw extractor while the Mark V does not, otherwise they are very close in design. I had a very good friend who had a Mark V in 240 with the Weatherby 3-9 scope and I thought it was gorgeous. He passed away and his widow offered it to me for $500 but with a kid in collage there was no way I could buy it. One of her neighbors bought it.

The .460 should have adequate recoil to loosen your bridgework.
I had a .458 win mag for a while ,and it was plenty.

It doesn't have to be loaded that hot. 1800 to 2000 fps is just fine.

I was tuning the .458 up hoping to go to Africa ,so I wanted to see what it would do.
I think I liked the .416 Rem better.
