I have a couple hundred 110 gr Speer jacketed carbine bullets and I am not loading 30 carbine anymore. What powder is good to load these in a 30-30 case for the model 94? Is 2400 a good powder for low velocity plinking fun, or are there better powders? I have 4lbs of 2400 available.

I know this is a cast boolit forum, but I want to dispose of the 110 grainers through my 30-30 barrel.

I think that Bullseye will be your friend here if you are looking for plinking loads. Start with 6.0 grains and work up for velocities in the neighborhood of 1,200 fps.

2400 powder should work, but I haven't personally used it in this application. Start off with 13 grains of it for about 1,400 fps.

If you are looking to shoot them fast, then 4198 and 3031 can be use to good effect. Start with 26 grains of either powder and work up till you get what you want. Initial velocity should be about 2,200 fps.

I've often used 30 Carbine, 32/20 or 32 S&W boolits in the 30/30 and they work quite well for plinking or for young shooters.

While recoil is mild with these light bullets, make sure that your crimp will hold these slick sided carbine bullets if you use them through your magazine.

2400 should work well based on what I've read although I confess to not having used it.
IME Red Dot is an excellent choice for the lightest 'gallery loads', and has consistently worked better for me than Bullseye.

Make sure you'll get good feeding first though - I tried to get a Win94BB (356) to run with 158's and the relatively short bullets made for 100% failure-to-feed.

Edit: BTW, where in MT are you roughly? Feel free to PM me that if you'd like - I go through western MT every once in a while.
Best regards,

I love the 110s as a plinker/varmint load in the 30-30. I have never had a problem feeding in my Marlin. I have used Trail Boss at full case to base of neck, but my favorite is 27 grs 4198. Zippy.

I've used Reloder 7, IMR4227, and H4198. 2400 should work quite well. While not a big fan, the Lee Factory Crimp Die will provide a decent crimp on bullets without cannelure/crimp groove. Most fired in Marlin 336 .30-30, no problem feeding.

single load them it won't be the end of the world.

pick a velocity then target the powder speed best suited to it.
bulls-eye and red-dot would be for the slower end of things.
unique would get you 12-13-1400 fps without any drama.
2400 would get you into the 17-1800 area without too much trouble but might burn a little erratic if the powder is flung throughout the case.

Unique or 2400 works fine. Don't try to push them real fast.
