The inner bow Hunter is coming out of me.... I'm a little curious what some people's hunting loads look like down range...

I hear of people shooting oil bottles at those ranges so I'm just curious.

It's hard to tell…I'm still looking for where I stapled the target…hang on a minute, I'm going to sneak up on it a bit!...:bigsmyl2:

I cannot see that far so I do not ever bother shooting that far!!!!!!! Besides, I am just too darned lazy to walk out 200 yards to mess with a piece of paper. And then have to walk back again. Rinse and repeat!

30-75 yards is my thing.

Got that! Hate the walk myself.
But the information about stability is priceless. NO, I would not hunt that far. My 45-70 BFR has held steel at 500 meters and the best 500 yard group was 2-1/2" but the drop is around 26' so I had to aim at a tree branch way over since sights can not be adjusted that much.
My .475 held a 6" swinger at 400 yards with my WFN. First was a sighter my spotter seen and the next 4 hit. I gave him my gun and Pete hit 3X after I walked him in. The rifle guys came to see what we were shooting, they could not believe a revolver from Creedmore. Many of them packed up and went home without coming to see.

Sounds like those men knew their limitations. ;)

Reminds me of a time I was testing loads in a 10/22 build at 50yds. Guy a few benches down with his son was eyeballing my paper. Finally came over and with a severe case of knowitall-itis began to explain to me why shooting all over the target like that wouldnt do anything good.

Seeing a learning opportunity I asked his son - I guess 11 or 12 - to come look through my personal spotting scope and not the blurry, low powered range scope they were using. Kid peers down then jumps up and hollers "Dad those aren't shots all over that target! They're groups! He's shot little bitty groups all over it!"

Dad glares at me like he is pissed and yells at his son "go get your stuff, we're leaving!". Didn't even bother to look for himself. Never seen that guy at the range again

Standard load at 200 yds. Not the best target but one I have on hand. Highwall .45-70

Here is a chicken load that would also make a fine hunting load

Not so much a group, more like a loose association of like minded projectiles.

First 3 well centered with a spotter's help in a 15-20 L-R full value crosswind. It went downhill after he broke for a cup of coffee.

oil bottles tip over from the wind long before I get back to the bench if I put them up at 200 yds.
walk?
I usually park the truck next to the bench and drive down to the 2 and 300 yd line.

many of my rifles are sighted in at 200 yds since that's @ the average distance I shoot rock chucks and ground squirrels when hunting them.
I have lever guns set up for the 50-100 yd 'thick stuff' boolit hunting, where things happen quickly and many times the shots are on moving animals.
about as far as I shoot a bow is maybe 10-15 feet that's the outer limits of where I need to shoot
5-6 is probably average.

Brent, I would not complain about that at all. I can't do that with my Browning BPCR but made my revolvers do it to 500 meters.
You fellas show mighty fine shooting. Hardest thing ever is BPCR.

Indeed, I am quite happy with those two rifles, and they have won a fair number of BPCR and BPTR regionals now, so they are great shooters. However, I couldn't shoot groups like that at 5 ft, never mind 500 meters with a pistol! That's crazy stuff, if you can do that!

There are two kinds of 200 yard group - other than good and bad, of course. Some of them are twice the size of your 100 yard group, indicating that what is causing the dispersion is the gun. Others are more than twice as big, which other than in significant degrees of wind, puts the finger on the ammunition.

More good shooting shown.
I learned the revolver and how to load for them but I need a rest or Creedmore to hit anything. My off hand days slipped away and now I am going in for cataract surgery soon. I have a fog bank at my right eye. I have to shut my right eye to read the paper. The screen in front of me now is crazy bad.

Last thing I shot for groups at 200yds was a 1944 No4Mk1 Longbranch .303 Brit with issue sights that did 4.5" for 10 shots, but I wish I could do the same thing with a .30-30 that I use quite a bit more. I think I was just having a good day or maybe it was a fluke though cause my usual groups with that Enfield are closer to 6-7" at 200yds.
