I need to cast these for my double rifle. What mold and alloy do you use?

I'm new to the 45/70. This is my first mold and first cast. The mold is a Lyman 457193. It throws .459 out of the mold at 414 gr. I'm using straight WW's . I have a RCBS 300 gr. gas check mold on the way. I love the looks of the boolit. Now am I man enough to stand up under it ?

That was my first mould for the 45/70 many years ago. It's a great boolit and yours look spot on too. I normally also size to .459" and load it between 1,100 to 1,300 fps depending on the rifle.

At 1300 fps the 405gr is a pussycat.
I'm presently doing a 300gr JHP at 1850fps and it is quickly loosing its allure.

Lee 450gn coated using John Deere green from Smoke. The puny CB to the right is a 60gn .225 and the loaded round is a 40S&W. Sized to .460 and loaded in 458WM and chased through a Ruger M77 at 1600-1650fps on top of SR4759. Has an amusing kick with good accuracy at 100yrds. No wish or need to increase velocity. Had mouth surgery and it will be a while before I get to shoot the combo again.

Got my RCBS 82051 mold off of eBay . Very nice mold. If I can keep the mold temp down the boolits roll out. Throwing 320 gr. at .460. I pc'd them with tractor green and silver mix, sized to .4585. Gas check of course. Kind'a purdy.

my 405-458 drop out of my mould at 412 gr. I load them in front of 70 gr. blackpowder for my 45-70 1884 dantish rolling block I used the same load in my 1884 trapdoor not much recoil at all.

Tenbender: my goto boolit for the .45-70 is that same boolit. (RCBS .45-300FNGC) However my 1st mould only dropped at .457 with WW. I bitched at RCBS and they made me a new mould that drops at .462 and I size to .460.

33 gr of 5744 moves that at about 1550 fps and if you have a little heavier gun it can be a decent shooter for Cowboy Silhouette. I can shoot 40 of them in one sitting easy.

With your mould dropping at .458 and PC ing them you're gonna be right in there.

I started my powder drops at 25 gr but the trajectory wasn't usable for the Silhouette Game I kept bumping it up until it was flat enough to get good hits out to 200 M with only one or two elevation changes. Dead on at 100 M

With the GC there is no leading at all and I can shoot as many as I want without cleaning and when I do clean it only takes a few patches.

I'll have to look at Powder Coating boolits a little closer as I can see some big advantages for pistols like Glocks and high speed Rifle Boolits.

Randy.

you should call these 405boolits "hulk's punch"...
