I was casting some 45 230gr rn bullets last night using a 4 cavity SAECO mould (box marked Carpenteria, California) that I bought from Paul Fitz Jones maybe 15 or more years ago. At the time, I also bought a new in the box SAECO 185 gr swc mould in 45 that I have yet to use.
I paid stupid money (at the time) for the pair but boy this guy was salesman!
These moulds are beautifully made, supposedly spcially machined from a meehanite alloy, have beautiful rosewood handles, and was said to be from his personal stash of moulds made specially for him by SAECO (or so he said at the time).
SAECO was, in their early days I guess, primarily an aerospace contractor that machined parts for rockets and planes. It stood for Santa Ana Enginering Company and they turned out some wonderful bullet moulds, amongst other reloading products.
Both moulds were new in the box when I bought them, and they had a brochure with Fitz grips in it and a brochure with lube recipes.
They are as close to casting with a Hensely & Gibbs without actually casting with a Hensley & Gibbs mould.
As I recall, this man was the National (or was it West Coast?) rep for Star Reloader Machines many years ago, and he had cancer at the time and was seliing everything. That was his story anyway.
Does anyone know if he is still around?
Just wondering.
