I'm looking at my old SKS in the safe, and it's begging to be shot with cast boolits. Can any of you suggest some good loads that might shoot well in it? I prefer loads that will function the action. Please include as much detail as possible about your load. Thanks!

here is some older but very good advice.
pay attention to Ed's use of the boolit he designed.
the LEE version is not the one he designed but might still work any way.
NOE I think is making his now.

Thanks for that great read River! Is this the mould that resembles Ed's design? It's the only one I see that AK/SKS is mentioned.

I'm shooting the Lee 312-155-2R, gas checked. 15.5 hrs of 2400. It is a great load in my chi com.

Thanks for clarifying that Rnut. I see he has a .312" and a .314" version of that boolit. I've never slugged my Chicom SKS, do you think a .312" sized boolit would be a good fit?

I think NRUT beat me to it.
but here it is again.

the difference is in the nose shape and diameter.
that little area makes a huge difference between accuracy at velocity and not.

the noe molds usually cast a bit big anyway.
I'd get the 312 and plan on being able to size to 313 or 312.

I haven't shot cast in my SKS and don't know it's throat & groove dia..
Also I don't have the NOE Harris bullet mold, just a LEE version with misaligned mold blocks, so I don't use it..

I do shot cast (183 gr. Loverin design) in my CZ527 7.62X39 sized any where from .311 to .314..
10 shot group from both sizes where 2.60"..
Though that was kinda strange..

I'm using the NOE 314-160 Harris designed boolit heat treated and sized to .314" for my Yugo. 21.0 gr Reloader 7 or 25.0 gr IMR4895 shoots better than any jacketed loads or factory ammo.

I shoot the Lee .312 185 gr gas checked boolit in my Yugo SKS over around 20 grains of IMR 4895.

Nice mild load, not fast but accurate as these old eyes are and smacks hard.

If you can locate a copy, HANDLOADER #177 has an article with many 7.62x39 cast bullet loads using a variety of bullet designs and weights. While these loads were worked up using a Ruger bolt-action, many would be suitable for use in an SKS.

Which if any, would be suitable for the small Texas white tail I hunt?

IMO you would need a fn 150 gr minimum for whitetail. I am not sure of a boolit that would feed as my 7.62 is a single shot.

I'm using a old ideal 311413, and just gas checking it ,not sizing , loaded it with 2400 and that chi com rifle would shoot better and more accurate than chi com ,of wolf ,or even the yugo stuff, I cannot rember the load but the correct diam was ..314 as dropped from mould , I've tried that Lee thing and never got any accuracy with it out of several .30 cals .

I wouldn't hold back on any big 'ol deer using that NOE Harris boolit over about 1800 FPS! Of course, a kill shot is a killed deer.
