I cast some of these up yesterday and want to load some up for testing. It was my first time to cast with an RCBS mold. I must say it was a pleasure to cast with. I don't have the RCBS cast bullet book. Does anyone have a good load for this bullet. I will be using a Winchester 94. This is my first venture into cast in a rifle. From what I have read here, this is a good cartridge to start with. I would like to go for both accuracy, but also enough power for hunting.

............21.0grs of 4198 would be my suggestion to start with. However, you can use a jacketed book load for it too. Use the slowest powder shown to start.

I got a used RCBS 150FN mold last winter. There was a can of sized, checked and lubed bullets with the mold. I tried 28 grains IMR 4895 and the thing shoots great in my Win 94! I have about used up those bullets and will have to cast some soon. I hope mine shoot as well. I haven't chronographed this load but it is probably around 1800 FPS and can be increased if desired.

I have found 34g of old surplus 4831 with this RCBS 30-150FN shoots well from my Marlin 336 .30-30. Velocity is 1753 fps with SD of 21. Air cooled boolets and quench cast shot the same and with the same basic velocity.

I used 19 gr. of SR 4759 with the 150 gr. RCBS bullet in my 94 Win. It was an accurate combo in my rifle and knocked down the 200 meter rams whenever I could hit them. Sadly, that rifle is gone but I still have the mould.

I load 18.8 gr SR4759 for the Win. 94. It's a nice accurate load and youngsters
really enjoy shooting that load!

All the slower burning pistol powders or faster burning rifle powders mentioned will work fine. I like 2400, 4227, 4759 and 5744. One of those should work for you. My TC 21" barrel likes 4227 with that RCBS cast bullet but My M94 Carbine really likes that bullet cast of WWs + 2-3% tin over 21 gr of 5744, sized .309, lubed with javelina and a Hornady GC (WW cases with WLR primers). That load shoots 1.5-2 MOA at 100 yards out of my M94 all day long. My M94 has a Lyman reciever sight and post front sight. Velocity is 1835 fps and I'd not hesitate hunting close range deer with it. I'd suggest trying several of the powders that have been mentioned.

Thanks a lot for all the input. Thanks especially to Will for copying the RCBS manual for me. I am very grateful. I am going to play with some of these loads and if I can remember I will post back results.

I loaded up a round today and cycled it through the Mod 94. I have the bullet crimped in its crimp groove, but the rifling engraves the bullet some. Is this good or bad? I know it will shoot this way, possibly with an increase in pressures. I can't really seat the bullet deeper, unless I load one at a time, since 30-30 cartridges should be crimped to avoid compression in the magazine. Again this is my first foray into cast bullets in rifles, so any advice is appreciated.

happy7,

I'd consider myself fortunate to have a bullet fit like that, assuming the rifle functions okay. You shouldn't have pressure problems with cast bullets.

29 grains of IMR 3031 and the 30-150-FN RCBS has always preformed well for me in all of my 30-30s. I cast water quenched WWs, gas checked. ALOX lubed.

my 30-30 likes 150gr cast with gas checks and 24.7grs of Reloder 7 and fill the case to about 1/8'' from the top with Cream of Wheat.
