The 429421 has been my bullet for longer than I care to admit...it would age me. HaHa

I have my loads with other powders...but I have recently been shooting some Power Pistol in the 44 specials and I like it as much as I like Unique. So, I was wondering if any of you have loaded any mid range 44 magnum loads...comparable to 10grs of Unique...using Power Pistol. If so, would you please share your experience with this.

Thanks

well PP is right at unique and close to herco at the same time depending on the case and bullet/boolit weight used.
pretty much the same as BE-86.
10grs wouldn't be too far off of 10grs of unique.

In .44 special 8.0 of Power pistol does very well for me in .44 special guns. In .44 magnum 9.0 grains has been very good in several guns. both of those loads are from a Brian Pearce article.

Like you I have been a long time user of 2400, at first using 22 grs. with the Keith bullet as Elmer suggested but after a couple of years back in the 60's I dropped one grain to 21.0 & I've stayed there ever since & never seen any difference & neither have several elk & a lot of deer.
I've taken 4 elk with that load, can't remember on the deer. I've also used your 10 grs. of Unique on many deer & it has served me well. The much newer Power Pistol is gaining in popularity all the time & I have a few pounds of it that I'm using in some calibers but haven't used it in the 44 magnum. It has a growing fan base that's for sure, even down to some of the small calibers. Who would have ever thought even in the last 10 years or so that so many new powders would still be coming around, not me!

My 1973 Ruger Super Blackhawk shoots the Lyman 429421, 250 grain cast, with almost anything I put under it. My favorites are 6.5 grains of Red Dot for 808 fps, 22 grains of WW296/H110 for 1168 fps, and 22 grains of 2400 for 1434 fps. I shoot those three loads the most and the accuracy is match grade. I have never shot my SBH off of bags, only off hand standing on my hind legs. My SBH left the Ruger factory with a 3.5 pound trigger pull so the big iron has been easy to master. My fading eyesight is my limiting factor right now, but I'm scheduled for surgery this coming August.

I agree on the 429421. Favorite since before 1960.
I like 7.5 grains of PP but prefer Unique.
If I go above this level I use Herco.

My favorite boolit in 1956 and beyond and 22 gr of 2400 was what I used. I wish I still had the old mold. But things change, guns and powders so I am not up to date with new powders.
Varget with rifles but not most pistol powders.

I mostly shoot my 429421 with 20-21,5 gr of Vihtavouri N110.

Years ago ( in the '90's) I ran thru a pound of Unique comparing my results with AA#5 in 44mag, 45 Colt and 357. I got better accuracy and cleaner burning out of the AA#5 in my loadings for all 3. My 44 mag 10gr Unique equivalentish (not sure that's a word) load for the 429421 is 12gr AA#5. I hunt deer with this.

While not a .44 load, I like power pistol for above-the-middle 10mm loads.

My favorite load with a 429421HP is 8.6g of Green Dot. Velocity is around 1050fps, and accuracy is better than 1" for 5 shot groups from a bench rest with a 4X Leupold EER scope. Based on my rather crude experiments down thru the years, I have found that I can obtain the same velocity with Green Dot compared to Unique, by using 10% less of a charge. IE 9g of Green Dot is roughly equivalent, at least in my .44 mags, to 10g of Unique. In the currant era of high powder cost and low availability of powders such as Unique,2400 and Bullseye, I'm glad that Green Dot is so versatile and can be used in the .44 mag.

6.5 gr red dot gets me around 975 to 1000 fps depending on gun and bbl length.

What is your accuracy with the 6.5g Red Dot load with 429421? I have several pounds of Red Dot that I've accumulated down thru the years and have never tried it in any of my 44's or 9mm's.

It is good, almost up to your old 7 gr of Green Dot. I have been able to find Red Dot in 4 and 8 lb kegs locally where Green Dot is only in 1 lb cans when I see it so I go with RD.

I've been playing with HS-6 in the 44 SPL with the 429421 and Lee's 200gr RNFP. This is the only powder I need. Meters exact every time, clean burning and very, very accurate in my little Flat Top. I have some loaded in 44 mag and 357 mag but too hot for this old fat boy to go set up chrony and shoot some groups. Will get around to it when it cools off.

loaddata.com shows 9.0 gr Power Pistol with the 250 Keith 429421 at 987 fps in a 6.5 inch barrel. 9.5 gr at 1120 fps from a 7.5 inch barrel.

I like 10 gr. of Unique. Being an upper middle age type person, I still use 20 gr. or 2400......when I need to really deliver the mail.
Old guy = old vintage powder.
