New guy from San Antonio. Frequently eavesdroped here but finally registered. Member on calguns, TGT, gunboards, and thr. Figured what better place to start the next phase of my hobby.....

Looking to get I to casti g here in South Texas. Just curious if there was anyone around the San Antonio area with equipment who can help get me started?

Great to have another member from The Republic.

Sorry I'm a bit too far east of you to meet up. You can learn a bunch from reading the stickies at the tops of each subsection as well as asking questions

I believe I know the basic about casting... Hot lead. Warm molds. Smoke. Pour. Cut. Drop.

I've known how to do other things but still went horribly wrong the first time though so I'd still like a coach if you will.

Well. I currently load 9mm with 115gr HAP bullets. I'm at about $.17/Rd all said and done... I'd like to get that down to $.06 per round sometime and lead is the way to do it. We have a tire guy at our shop who gave me a bucket full of wheel weights. I melted them all into ingots. Have about 35# now. Gonna get another bucket soon too

The 'ingot' stock is an addiction in itself. Each time I pull 20 pounds out to cast…I feel guilty and have to try and put 40 pounds back.

Welcome bub…charlie

I'm also a bit north of you but hope you enjoy your time spent here.

I'm with OS OK...each time I cast, I want to replace the used lead x 2.

Well, I had thought about asking someone to swap lead for boolits at about a 2:1 ratio by weight but it seems nobody wanted to do that. I was directed to find someone who could teach me the craft.

Hit a lot of the small tire shops! There are a TON of them. I visit SA couple of times a year, and pick buckets of WW cheap when I'm there. I live in Amarillo.

We have about 300 vehicles, trailers, and machinery at my work. We have 2 guys who change tires all day. They stay pretty busy.

Today I picked up another 20-25 pounds of weights from them. I'll sort them this weekend. If its like the last batch I anticipate about 18-20 pounds of lead from it. Still waiting to find someone to trade a mold from. All in time I suppose.

I also went to a scrap yard to turn in some copper and aluminium yesterday. I asked about lead and he said they pay $.20/lb <99 lb or $.30 for >100lb. I asked about buying and he was all too happy to tell me about all the metals.he sells. He did tell me that it's a lot of wheel weights though and other small little parts. No ingots or sheets or anything though. Says local guys come up and pick through to find pieces they want and just buy what they will use. Don't have to worry about sorting out Non-lead either. Didn't get a price from him though.

I live on the Border (Cameron County) as we consider anything north of the Sarita Border Patrol Checkpoint as Yankeeland.
