Has anyone had a problem with the Lyman 427098 205g .44-40 boolits in Lever guns? Duke Venturino in one of his books states the ojive is too long for crimping to correct OAL for magazine firearms, resulting in bullet set back...Never loaded this bullet before and as I have an order for couple hundred of these boolits and may need to change it...
Thoughts, advise, experiences and suggestions appreciated...Thanks

J.R.233,
Welcome to the forum. The 427098 does not have a crimp groove and since, when seated in a 44-40 case, the base of the bullet would be below the neck with nothing to support it using smokeless, there is a good possibility of the bullet being pushed into the case when in the magazine. The use of a Lee FCD which will press a crimp groove into the bullet during the crimping process well help keep the bullet in place.

When using a capacity load of b.p. that is not an issue.

Accurate Molds offers a mold which is a copy of the 427098 with the crimp groove added.

Another option which works well for tubular magazine rifles is to use a nominal caseful, about 25 grains of Alliant RL7 or 22 grains of IMR4198, so that the powder charge provides base support for the bullet in the same manner as if loading black powder. This load does not exceed factory pressures and is safe in sound 1873 Winchester rifles and modern clones.

Thanks guys. That is what I thought..Ive been loading 44-40, 205, .427, LFPs for CAS ranges for years without problem...Have a match coming soon with some targets out 250-300 for the lever guns...Thought Id try something a bit more balistically appealing, thus the 427098 sized in .429...Think I will reorder some other bullets, but keep the 427098s coming also..I can play with the charges and may be able to use them afterall..I do cast, but mostly .45-70..I may give the accurate molds a try also...

that load of 4198 seems like a lot but it actually is a too slow powder so it's not like a super fast load.
it just pushes the boolit down the barrel, similar to using 4831 in the 30-30.
sound incorrect, but it burns clean and is actually pretty nice to shoot.

Just happen to have a partial can of 4198. I'm definitely going to try it.

While not ideal for revolver use, I have found that the RL7 and 4198 loads are very accurate and satisfactory in rifles. The exact charge weight is not critical, use enough to eliminate free airspace in the case and to achieve slight powder compression. You cannot get enough in the case to get into any trouble. This method works well with jacketed bullets of standard weight for the caliber, loading 100-grain Hornady XTPs intended for the .32 H&R Magnum in the .32-20, using the 180 XTP for the .40 S&W in the .38-40 and the. 430", 200-grain XTP intended for the .44 Magnum in the .44-40! Alot of old hillbillys around here still have '73 Winchesters, don't cast and only want one box of ammo to deer hunt with, and this is the standard recipe around here to keep the old timers in venison.

In the .44-40 velocity is almost identical to the original blackpowder load. With jacketed bullets it approximates the velocity of the pre-WW2 balloon-head softpoints loaded with the long discontinued Sharpshooter powder, about 1350 fps from a 20" barrel and 900 fps from a 5-1/2" revolver. Clean burn in a rifle, but expect some unburned powder in the wheelgun, but entirely safe to shoot in them.

I used to roll crimp mine in the top grease groove for my 1892 src with 8.3 grs of unique.

I was able to load up some of Lyman 427098 with 4198 powder at 1.565 and 1.575 OAL.....These worked perfectly in 3 different magazine rifles (92, 73, Spencer) and shot one hole at 50yds..Also cranked out a few rounds with a charge of 4227 that did fill the case to bottom of bullet...These I crimped at 1.59 and 1.57..The 4227 loads cycled fine but not as accurate as the 4198..No problem with set back with any of these loads..Thanks for the 4198 load and advise!
