Hi guys.

Im brand new to the world of casting, and have very little experience shooting cast bullets in general.

I recently picked up a 2 cavity Lyman 358156 and was wondering if there would be any negative effects from shooting them without gas checks?

Thanks in advance. Love this forum!

Gas checks are to prevent leading, but a GC boolit without the gas check is no more likely to lead than a plain base boolit. Shoot them at moderate velocity and see what happens. The easiest cure for leading I have found is to shoot a jacketed bullet occasionally. If there is severe leading shooting jacketed may cause pressure problems so approach with caution and low velocity. The 358156 is a good choice.

You should be fine with loads in 38 SPL & mid / upper mid range in 357 Mag.

yep back e'm down and you'll be fine.
put a check on and ramp e'm up.

in my 41 mag.
I use a G/C mold without it, and about 4 grs of tite-group to plunk bunnies and make holes in paper at 20-25 yds.
if I need to reach out there further or do more damage I put checks on the bottom and 2400 under them.
I have other molds too now, but this was my first 41 mold and just getting the checks on was a pain.

Thanks for the link. Sounds like I shouldn't hesitate to use them. Never really thought about the heeled bullet comparison (.22lr) that's never needed a check.

ive been shooting the fairly new lee 200 gr flat nosed bullet unchecked and powder coated from my 35 marlin for a month or so now with no ill effects . I'm not pushing it very hard as its just a plinker load. but I have no idea how it would work out if I were to push it harder .

gonna be a permanent condition?? Have the check step milled out.

If you're not pushing hard you'll be fine without gas check. I do agree though if this is going to be for forever, I'd probably mill out the step.

Shilohive thought about this also . it would have to be a do it yourself job though, who wants to pay an hour labor to a machine shop for a 20$ mold

Yeah, good point. I didn't really think that through.
