does anyone know if they will cycle in a marlin 1895 45-70? I guess I shouldn't have asked if anyone could spare a few, sorry., Travis

I have the mold, but I would not use it in a tube magazine. The point is rather sharp and I believe that you would run a severe risk of the ones in the magazine tube setting off the others. I haven't tested them in my 1895GS, mainly because I don't want to risk a tube detonation. The boolit does shoot very well my in 1884 Trapdoor Springfield.

I was planning on trimming them if I did go with them, have you tried the 450rnfp gr?

I've had good luck with the Lee 405HB and the Lyman 457125 (500 gr) slugs. The profiles on both noses poses miniscule risk of detonation of primers inside the magazine tubes. Also I've had good terminal performance with both on whitetails and elk. I haven't tried the 450rnfp, however. What are you looking to do with the rounds? Hunting? Plinking?

I have been getting into pig hunting more, haven't got one yet but I have learned a lot by tracking them on tthe WMA that I go to. I think it should be soon, if I can decide on a new bullet mold! lol

What velocity are you looking to push it at? If you're looking at much faster than 1200-1400 FPS you're going to need a gas check. The ones that I've dropped out of my trapdoor rifles were only going at between 1350 and 1250 FPS (405 vs 500 gr) and they dropped Dead Right There. I also cast my boolits rather soft... sometimes as soft as 40:1 but never harder than 16:1. I find with these alloys I get a good level of expansion... but that is judged purely by size of exit wounds. I haven't recovered a single boolit yet. Most of my shots are around 100 yards or less, so the low velocity has very little effect on boolit flight. The 45-70 does have a rather rainbow trajectory and higher velocity will flatten it out some.

no my load for 405's is 1400 and I plan on staying there, I believe slower is better, to an extent

you loadd very similar to me, I don't have a chronograph so im going by the books, but I would put a 500 at about 1300or a little less, I like my gun and no need to strain it when those loads are already overkill!
