Got a question. Been using a home-made lube (60/40, beeswax/vasoline) on my group buy gc 180 gr 357 boolits. Works great in both my handi-rifle (at 1650 fps) and my 6" gp100 (at 1200 fps). I use a blue hard lube (think it's rooster) on my 330 gould hp boolits in my 45-70 (velocity = 1450 fps using imr 4198). It works ok, but I like working with the 60/40 lube better. I pan lube and use a lee sizer. Can anybody think of any reason that I couldn't use the 60/40 on the 45-70 boolits? Figured somebody would know.

That ought to work just fine. IIRC, that's fairly close to Darr lube except he used 50/50 and sometimes added a little RCBS case lube. Most on here recommend that you don't use petroleum-based lubes with Black Powder, don't know if Vaseline qualifies.

vaseline is petroleum based.
but i have heard of guys using some petroleum stuff in their b/p with good results.
bees wax and crisco has been a b/p lube i have heard of.

Equal parts of Bees Wax, Crisco and Peanut Oil, all natural, works great for B/P. And, as Runfiverun mentioned, no petroleum additives.

If you want the lube a bit stiffer, add a bit more Bees Wax.

No reason not to use it on the 45-70.

For years I used a similar ratio.

Are you going to use black or smokeless powder with it?

From your moniker, I would think smokeless.

There seem to be a few guys with the Siamese reworked to 45-70.

Have you worked up a good load for yours?

Strawhat: I'm using smokeless. I developed quite a few loads for the Siamese but right now I'm playing with a Handi-rifle.
