The 458x2" aka 458 American is the 458 Win Mag shortened to 2" and loaded with standard 0.458" bullets. Any bullet intended for the 45-70 Government is suitable. The power level is equivalent to modern hand-loaded 45-70 ammo or 450 Marlin factory ammo (if any still exists). The real difference between the 458 American and the 45-70 is the guns for which the two are intended. Frank Barnes designed the 458 American to function in bolt action rifles. Except for the Siamese Mauser, most bolt actions won't work well with the large rim of the 45-70.

I have numerous molds suitable to this cartridge. If you are new to casting I suggest you start with one of the Lee molds or perhaps an RCBS 45-405-FN. Personally, I like the LBT LFN GC 350.

Take care, Tom

The 450 Marlin is as close to the 458 American as you can get except for the re-design of the belt so it will not chamber in a standard 458 Winchester Mag.

As mentioned shortening a standard 458 could lead to feeding problems in a bolt action.

Send me a PM with your regular email address and I can send you an article about the .458x2" American that I recently scanned as a pdf file. It's an article from an old 70's vintage "Gun World" magazine.
