Hey Guys

I ordered a a RCBS 300 grn GC bullet for my 45-70 Buffalo Classic. For those who know these guns here is my question. Would you use wheel weight or lino for this application....and why? Thanks!

I never used straight lino for anything other than mixing down.

For my BC I use the RCBS 325 PB with WW and everything has been just fine up to 1600fps. Above that I use a Hornady 350gr jacketed just because I bought a pile of them blemished a while ago.

Not sure if you shot the BC much but I find it will bring tears to my eyes after ten or so shots when loaded around 2000fps That metal butt-plate is brutal.

my 86 wears me out with 435's at 1600 ish fps and I know it's a lot heavier than the buffalo classic.
I'm using ww's cut with soft lead and water dropping.
for velocity's in the 1300 or so area I'd skip the water dropping.

barnabus,
I have been testing the bullet that you have ordered, not in the BC, but in my 1886 which has a similar twist rate.
I use gas checks on all the bullets from that mold regardless of velocity. If I keep my melt pot at 700 degrees, bullets drop at 0.4583'' to 0.4586''. That's using clip on wheel weights. I use a lee push through sizer at 0.458, and water dropped bullets are good to 2150fps with good accuracy.
Using pure lino at the above velocity, accuracy is slightly better, but not by much. The lino bullets cast at around 0.460'', and when sized with the 0.458 die, they come out at 0.459'' after spring back.
Whether or not the slight increase in accuracy is due to the harder lino, or extra 1 thou in diameter, I do not know. There may be no need to use lino if you do not need the larger diameter. The testing I did, was just to find a max load with good accuracy without leading. Non of the loads I tested leaded the barrel. I tested 75 rounds off the bench at between 1900 and 2150+fps through my 1886. I wont do that again. Now I am looking for good loads in the 1700 to 1800 fps range using the same bullet. My bore slugged at 0.457''.
I will save my lino for something else.
Hope this helps.

Ive found my BC works with heavy lead going slow.

Paper patched boolits going 1200-1300fps

<-----I use a 540gr 5BHN soft hunk of lead

But then I dont shoot them girlie boolits
