What would you consider too short for .223 brass? I have some that measure 1.745" and understanding they grow with shooting, I'm not sure what would be a good "no-go" measurement.

Seems over the course of a few years some manufacturers shortened the case. FC seems to be the bad 1 and I reserve most of those for conversions anyway. LC brass normally runs 1.760 and I trim those down to 1.755.

But to answer your question: 1.750 is about as low as I like to go. Not saying shorter than that wont work mind you, I'm just fussy with what I do.

Yes, once fired federals often run .020 under max length....which is nice since they can be loaded without trimming!

Sammi says 1.760 -.030 so you can use brass that still meets the spec down to 1.730. I trim to 1.750 and I don't use anything I come across under 1.740. I have enough brass that I don't have to.

I'm fussy too. By the way, your avatar makes me laugh each time I see it.

Thanks to all for your time and input. After I finish trimming and sorting it looks like I will have some short, annealed brass to get rid of.

I trim to 1.755 and use a light collet crimp with NOE 72 .128" for accuracy in my AR, so anything under 1.750-1.745 gets loaded as 55g lee plinkers, or cut and converted to 300 blackout.

Short 223 brass sounds like a good excuse to pickup a 300 blackout to cast for....[emoji57]. Just planting a seed....

I already built one. It was the first AR I assembled both the upper and the lower. 16" Hbar 300AAC so I can cast. It is a great way to use short or neck damaged 223 brass and I REALLY enjoy shooting that AR knowing I can make everything for it including forming the copper gas checks.
