If you do a lot of casting sooner or later the mold will wear and the pins will have to be moved slightly out to re-align the mold blocks. Beating on the pins with a hammer and punch is not the way to do it as in most cases you will end up damaging the blocks.

I recommend an arbor press. They are not all that expensive and can be used for a lot of other jobs other than moving mold pins as well.

I usually also place the mold on a soft pine block with a hold drilled into the pine block so that the pin can move out of the block when you press it in either direction.

Always check your mold first for debri or leading before pressing any pins as any build up of crude will sometimes also prevent blocks from being in alignment when they are closed.
