Working outside on Saturday. Having a good time.
All of a sudden a bug flies into my ear!!!!!!
Panic!!!!!
Couldn't see it, so it was deep in.
Went to the 24 hour clinic.
First they tried to flush it out with water. Didn't work. Bug just got wet.
Could still hear it doing something in there.
Next they killed it with some kind of oil. Dead bug. Not moving anymore.
Doc pulled most of it out. I didn't get to see it, but he said it was kind of big.
I guess I have big ears.
Had to use drops to help clean it out overnight.
Went back the next day and almost all gone.
One wing and some bits still in there.
Doc said to keep doing the drops three times a day and come back Friday.
First time I've had this happen to me.
Doc said it more common that people think.
Kind of scary having something crawling inside your ear.
Never want it to happen again.
Stupid bug.

That's what you get for living in Hawaii. Lived on the Big island for a couple of years. Man those centipedes were big.

Doesn't need to be Hawaii, happened to me on MCB Quantico doing the night compass exercise around Lunga Reservoir in 1970.

My bunkie was an aggie from Texas A&M, told me to stay still, squirted GI insect repellent down my ear, "Don't kill the damned bug, he's pissed off enough now to crawl out on his own!"

And sure enough he did! Dung beetle!

+1 for DEET!

Here bugs arnt as big a problem. young kids find soybeans or shelled field corn and a kernal ends up in nose or ear and forgotten about. A few days later they are in pain since the seed has sprouted and putting pressure on the area. Removing it becomes a real issue since its sprouted and held tight in place. dark moist enviroment promotes quick growth. I did once have a bee get in a bottle of pop I was sipping on at the range. Little thing stung me twice on back of throat before I got it spit out. Was painfull all afternoon and caused heavy drooling most of the afternoon also.

Never had a bug in the ear, I have what the wife calls tumbleweeds growing in mine. What's a PITA up here in the remote wilderness is when you work outside, I don't care what it is but if it flies your the new and improved version of an Oasis. They will land on you, you shoo them away and they circle around and come right back. Trying to use a rifle scope is a real trick, there's almost always a bug or 2 trying to get between the lens and your eyeball. It's so dry up here they just swarm you trying to get whatever moisture they can, and if your sweating.....your now considered the mobile canteen.

Never had a bug fly in . . that would be enough to freak anybody out!

I only have about 20% hearing in my left ear and my right is not 100%. My wife mentions every so often that I should consider hearing aides. She got time to go to an audiologist for a hearing test who in turn, sent me to a eye/ear/nose & throat specialist. He took one look in each ear and said he wanted to "clean" them. So, he had me lay down and he proceeded to use, for want of a better word, a vacuum that he inserted into each ear. When he was doing my right, he asked me . . . "do you do a lot of mowing?" Yep I do. "Hmmmm . . . your grass exhaust is on the right isn't it?" Yep, it is! He then asked . . "Do up mow with the right side of the mower close to fences and buildings?" Yep, I do . . . why?"

He then laughed and told me that he was getting a lot of grass out o my ear which was deposited down deep. He advised that I start wearing ear muffs or putting cotton in my ear to prevent that. Evidently, it's not that uncommon but I could notice the difference in the hearing in my right ear once he was done. He also told me that he had quite a "collection" of things he's removed from ears . . . bugs, stones, seeds, etc.

OP . . . . glad you got the bug out and are fine. I'm sure you are going to give many of us "nightmares" tonight! :-)

Boy, That's enough to make me quit trimming the hair in my ears. Maybe that's the reason us old guys have hairy ears, to protect us.

My wife took our oldest son in for his annual check up when he was about 2 or 3 (he's 41 now). When the Dr looked in his ear my wife said he pulled out a pop bead. We're not sure how it got in there but we suspicion his sister now 44 knows more than she's telling us.

When my daughter was about 10 yrs old, we had a pesky housefly buzzing around. She and I were on opposite sides of the room and the fly kept circling around the room. As it passed by I reached out and grabbed it. I knew I had it because I could feel it moving in my closed hand.

She insisted that I hadn't caught it and I told her to open her mouth - she complied and opened widely. I pitched the fly across the room and she immediately started gagging and finally swallowed the fly. I was as surprised as she was!

To this day, when I tell the story, she insists that it never happened :-)

When I was a kid I awoke to something in my ear. Mom tried water, then oil in my ear. The beetle would come out, then run back in. Finally she used a flashlight to attract it enough to catch it. Very noisy experience.

A fly crawled up my wife's nose while she was sleeping one time. That had to be one of the funniest things i ever saw!:bigsmyl2: She came up out of a sound sleep snorting like a hog and yelling unlady like things till it came out. and then just about wrecked the room trying to kill it.

Story in my family goes that my paternal Grandfather-while haying, think horse drawn sickle bars, dump rakes, etc-swallowed a grasshopper. He couldn't spit it up, so it went down, kicking all the way.

I once rode my Hog through what looked like smoke. Turned out to be a swarm of honey bees, and several wound up inside the helmet. One of them wound up stinging me inside the ear. Talk about a fast stop and dismount. The honey left on my visor couldn't be wiped off and I was afraid to ride without it.

Gee almost forgot aout a flea that got in my ear one night. Just about ready to cut my ear off just to get rid of it. I used peroide to flush him out. As it foams it will push a bug out pretty easy. Friend had a fly get in his ear, had to go to the ER to get it out, thought he was going to go crazy. A dung beatle huh, we have them in the pasture where the goats are, they sure do their job effeceintly.
How did we ever survive as kids, glad evrything came out ok.

Went back for a check-up today.
Still had a wing in there.
They flushed more, more, more....
Had two people working on it.
Nurse held the ear open and controlled the light.
Doc grabbed it and a small bit came out.
Tried again and pulled the whole thing out. It was big.
Dam bug caused me a bunch of stress.

Them bugs need to be trained in personal space avoidance. How dare they? Can't we pass a law?

It's happened to me in the boonies, and it really sucks.

Happens once a year, black flies and mosquitos are quite thick at times. I wear a net when I can. Never had see the Doc. Hope you are OK.
Ticks are bad too at times, you got to check yourself over. They carry Lyme disease now, nasty stuff!!
Be safe

I once rode my Hog through what looked like smoke.
Driving through central PA one night I hit a swarm that was so thick I thought it had started to rain. Didn't recognize the bugs but they sure made a mess on the windshield.

The mayflies around lake Erie are like that when they hatch. Swarms that will block off view thru windshields, the wipers smear them more than removing them. The dead on the roads are quite slippery. Ive seen them in piles along the roads and side walks almost like snow drifts. A big hatch can be quite disruptive for a few days.

You mean my brother and I weren't the only kids to do that ? I did the kernel of corn in the ear trick , brother did the bean up the nose! we didn't wait for any sprouting....panicked real quick !
Dad wasn't happy, now that I think about it , he was probably wondering if his two boys were idiots!

Nope, haven't been struck in the ear with a bug lately. but hit a particularly hard knot in a tree stump with a .451 ball from a Uberti 1860 army. Bounced right back, got to watch that big old ball arc towards me in what seemed to be slow motion, but far to fast to react to. no harm done, had on my shooting glasses. hit below the bottom rim, just a welt on the cheek. But a great attention getter. Backed me right off for future shots.
