Please take a moments pause today in remembrance of the sacrifices given freely by my 3496 brothers who are distinguished "conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States."

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -March 25 is National Medal of Honor Day.
Medal of Honor recipients number only 3,497 and range as far back as the Civil War.
U.S. Congress declared March 25, as National Medal of Honor Day. According to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society website (http://www.cmohs.org/), the first Medal of Honor was awarded to Pvt. Jacob Parrott on this date in 1863.
Here are a few interesting facts about the Medal of Honor:


First award of the Medal of Honor was made March 25, 1863 to Pvt. Jacob Parrott.
Last award of the Medal of Honor was made Feb. 29 to Senior Chief Edward C. Byers Jr.
Total number of Medal of Honor recipients - 3,497.
There are 78 recipients of the Medal of Honor still alive.
19 people have received the Medal of Honor twice.
The Medal of Honor is the only United States Military Award that is worn around the neck rather than pinned to the uniform.
