I was rendering wheel weights last weekend and was visited by the tinsel fairy. My ingot mold had moisture under some rust that I didn't notice and the result is shown in the picture. I also found out I had a hole in my glove and wound up with a surprisingly nasty burn on the top of one finger.

I didn't think to warm my ingot mold like I do boolit molds. We live and learn. You can bet I will next time. The extra time needed to cool the ingots is not a sufficient reason to skip that step.

Bummer about your finger. Glad you weren't seriously hurt!

At least you had a glove on, to mostly protect your hand. I almost cringe every time I read of someone casting or smelting bare handed.

Glad you were not more seriously hurt. Keep on top of that burn, they are not something to take lightly. And yeah, The Fairy likes damp dark places to hide!

I preheat my ingot moulds using a propane torch before the first fill, hoping to avoid exactly that.

Sorry it happened to you, but glad your OK other than the finger burn. It could have been much worse.

The tinsel fairy is a heartless witch.

That finger burn would have been small potatoes after my wife worked me over for messing up her sidewalk!...:bigsmyl2:

Then she would have turned to me and said…"Are you OK Honey?"

My method of preheat. Glad it wasn't worse.

Burns are painfull, make sure you get to cold water fast and keep the burn flushed and cold for 1/2 hour.

Jim, glad it was not worse and real glad it did not involve your eyes! Redhawk, I do believe you have a nice setup!

Like Bullwolf said a propane torch is my friend. If my molds get rusty I will bead blast them before using. Rust can hold moisture and look dry. I've had my share of burns from lead and they are painful no matter the size, you want to avoid them at all cost. Hope you heal up quick.
