Ok so I've been staring at the cases on the lyman 49th manual cover for a year now and would really like to know authoritatively what cartridge each one is. I can't find any results on google so I thought it might be fun to see who can guess the best. At some point maybe someone with ties to lyman can confirm the answers for us and we'll see whose eye is the best.

I have numbered them all in the picture so please use that numbering to avoid confusion, I'll start it off with my probably all wrong guesses so just copy this format to respond. If I get three of these right I'll feel proud of myself.

1: .243
2: no idea, maybe a .338 of some kind?
3: .223
4: .300 rem SAUM
5: 375 ruger
6: 460 weatherby
7: 45-70
8: .38 spl
9: .45 colt
10: .44 mag

If you already know the answers 100% from some source, please hold off on posting until a number of us have had a chance to guess. Please PM if you know them and I'll post later with credit to you.

This should be fun, the only reward I can offer to the winner is bragging rights.

I'm surprised no one has guessed yet, feel free to also post if you only want to guess on one or two.

I remember "Cartridges of the World" when you could do this. But now we have about a hundred times as many cartridges as we need.

I think a good place to start in the ID process is that largest case, #6. My best guess is that it is a wby .460 since it looks like it and that is the most powerful cartridge listed in the manual, so it sort of makes sense from an editing standpoint to have that be "top dog" in the photo for the manual. Can anyone say for sure on that one? Shoulder seems to look rounded so that would support the weatherby idea but I'm only speculating.

Once we have the largest one IDed 100% then it becomes easier to confirm the next and the next based on the size comparison.

Some might find this tedious but I think it is kind of fun to test our abilities of comparison, with a manual and diagrams on hand we should be able to nail this down if we can confirm one major cartridge in the photo.
