I got in touch with a guy in a printing shop and he has some linotype to sell me. I have no idea what to pay. I checked a scrap metal place online about average prices and got anywhere from .27 a pound to .42 per pound.

I don't want to get raped but I have never bought it before so I don't know.

BTW I told him that if he has a bunch I could more then likely find some buyers here. I can only afford so much. I'll see what he has and report back here for everyones information. If there's a way to work out a group sale I'll be happy to set it up for anyone that's interested.

But before I go to him I need to know what I should be offering on price.

please post some prices so I'll know.

Thanks

Look at completed auctions on eBay. 50 cents or less a pound is a steal. Buy it all at that price.

...........10-4 on the above. Linotype is a formula used in the printing industry that became obsolete 20 years ago. If you can find it for 50 cents a pound, buy all you can afford. While most (well) used linotype will be short on it's tin assay, it's sure have more then WW and should cast a superb, hard boolit.

Of course, ya don't HAVE to use it straight either. Mix a pound of it with 3 lbs of WW. I can't recall now if I paid 50 or 75 cents a pound for the last I got, and I'm afraid to use it:veryconfu :D

The little bit that comes up for sale around here is usually about $1.00+ per pound and has been for years. I've got a little stash that I've been hoarding for a long time. If I could find it for 50 cents a pound I'd buy a bunch.

I just bought 100lbs @ .75 per pound. I will have to pivck it up but who cares? That should take care of my needs for a while at 5lbs ww to 1lb linotype. Now to render those 800 lbs of ww in the shed.

Buckshot: We paid $.50 per pound (virgin lino) and that was over 3 years ago I think. I was happy to get it at that price. Should mention 20 years ago I paid $.15 per pound (print). Two years ago I swapped elevater lead (bhn8) straight across for lino (print). it cost me $.08 per pound. The same trade swapped 1 for 2 for 63/37 tin. On e-bay they get $1.00 a pound plus shipping for linotype. Tin is much more expensive then lino. ben1025

Being a consumate mizer, as most boolit geezers are, I feel ashamed to admit I just ordered six linotype pigs for twenty five skins through a fellow caster that won't reveal the source. I still have two buckets of type metal from a recycling metal center for .40/ lb. :coffeecom
