A friend of mine shoots mostly black powder in hia 45/70s. I told him of loading some Trailboss for my 357 lever rifle and he ask me if I knew of anyone using it in the 45/70.

I said I didn't know, but I knew who to ask, so is anyone using it and how is it working out?

I loaded up some Trail Boss and two types of Black Powder in a 45-70 a while back. The GOEX and Swiss BP was more accurate than the Trail Boss by about 2/3. Of course I was able to shoot all of the TB without cleaning the rifle. With the BP, I ran a wet patch down the bore after every three rounds.

I found Accurate 5744 to be a very good powder in the .45 rifle. Clean shooting and pleasingly accurate.

TB in 45-70 works well in H&R 1871 buffalo classic- interesting, different powder

I found the suggested Max load for TB in 45-70 is a joke, for me anyways. I dont recall the exact charge and I dont want to guess, but I know I was a full 4grs over max and nothing except accuracy changed in my NEF. The down fall is the bullets are very slow so long range shooting is alot harder.

I have burned about 8 pounds of TB in differnt rifles and handguns, it sure is fun for light plinking loads. From 32-20, 300 Savage, 454, 45-70 it works for me and is pretty accurate in all of those.

Agreed on the max. Only consistent thing i have read is not to compress.

~13 grains with 440g bullet got me all of ~1030 fps. accurate as hell and funny feeling to shoot a rifle subsonic, but it had a mortar trajectory...

Hmm, my experiences with it for 340 and 405 grain lead boolits, it was VERY accurate, but VERY slow! Can't locate my notes,(damn flat filing system!), but IIRC max was 14.0 for the 340. Nice thing was, it fills the case with the max load, no problems with powder position.

Hi Doug,

I find Trail Boss to be a powder with definite limitations. I've only used it in .45 Long Colts, and although it filled out the case better than Unique, I was bitterly disappointed with its performance at longer ranges.
Yep, if you're going to plink at 75 feet or closer, it has a point of aim fairly close to more powerful loadings, but it falls apart rapidly after that.
At about 100 yards, with Trail Boss, I had to aim about 4 feet over the target to hit it!
A loading with 8 grains of Unique only required a foot of elevation in order to hit the target (that's before I adjusted the sights!).
At that point, I put the rest of the can of TB on the back of the shelf and haven't used it since.
