Acquired a new to me 70's era rifle that came with a box of reloads labeled 225 gr. HP. Started to tear them down and found what appears to be a half jacketed bullet. Have been loading awhile but can't seem to remember coming across any of these. Internet search tells they were somewhat popular in the 70's and 80's with warnings of watching lower velocities as jacket could separate and lodge in the bore. For my education anybody with any info on them would be appreciated. Thanks.

Common when I was a kid. Went out of favor as they would separate (rarely) and leave the obstruction you described. If I had any, I'd shoot every one and enjoy them.

looks like they are made from a shell

When I started reloading for my .44 Magnums, in the early '80s, Speer made some, and IIRC, Nosler also made a HJSWC

I shot a lot of the Speer versions in the 70s. They made SWC and a SWCHP versions in .357" .41" and .429" diameters. They were marketed as a low cost alternative to the fully jacketed designs. You could certainly launch them faster than the company's swaged lead boolits which was attractive in a way. I liked them and I don't recall one ever separating, but the savings were probably not really that significant compared to the company's top of the line jacketed bullets. They were probably a good idea for non casting reloaders.

Update: Out of curiosity, I did a little research on the Internet and look what I found:

Thanks Scharf....
I really liked that bullet in 41 magnum , had about 1/2 an old box squirreled away . I had assumed that Speer stopped making them...next order I'm stocking up. Cool !

After reading this thread, I went and opened up my 41 Magnum ammo box looking for some of those half jacket 41 projectiles, either loaded or in the box. Sadly, while I found lots of stuff to shoot, the half jackets were AWOL. Thought I had some though...

By the way, nice Model 58 in your avitar GW.

when you can't decide between a gas checked boolit and a jacketed soft point?
I shot a bunch of 'em in the 70's and 80's, lots of 296 burned in 357 and 44 mag
I figured you couldn't get a "more exposed lead" softpoint.
