Could someone tell what this flap over snipers in the Navy Seals is all about?

Didn't know there was a flap. Do you have a link?

No link but it was mentioned several times on the news yesterday and today. I thought they were saying that the Seals were short of snipers but my wife said they are short of rifles. I just don't know. I tried a GOOGLE with no results.

I think the story was about being short of certain rifles

Their complaint is that when a particular tour is over in a combat zone, the rifles they used (personally zeroed, personally customized, and knew all the characteristics) were taken and sent back to the US command area. Saw this on Fox news yesterday.

Okay, I'm not a Marine but in the old days did they not get issued a rifle and it followed them from duty station to duty station? It would seem that once you achieve such elite status as a Seal some of your tools of the trade should stay with you throughout your career. I'm not near as good as them and I know I have my "old reliables ".

SEAL ought to keep his rifle until he needs a different one, or leaves the job.

A seal should keep his rifle forever.

Something funny must be going on. I have read that SOCOM has their own budget and it is rather large and that they procure their own stuff separate of BIG ARMY/NAVY. Guess some jerk on the Hill or in the White House are squeezing the purse strings.

There can't be that many SEAL's and in the context of our military spending, a rifle couldn't possibly be a big ticket item. I agree that they should keep their rifle until they need a new one or retire.

A navy man in my family shoots left handed. He carried a 9mm for a short stint on an off base security detail right after 9/11 but there were no left handed holsters available for issue. Obviously this slows down his reaction time. I personally bought a left handed Blackhawk holster for him and shipped it to Naples Italy during his tour of duty there. Really disappointing that someone who has volunteered his service cannot be equipped in a manner that provides efficiency and increases his margin of safety.

Hardly anyone actually uses the UM84 holster these days.
