As the subject reads, I picked up 200 pounds of wheel weights today. I paid $0.25/lb. That is the going rate at our local scrap dealers. I'm glad it isn't higher. After sorting out all the steel/plastic and zinc, I had about 100 pounds left to smelt down. The wife asked me why I bought this since she thinks I already have enough. After I told her how much I actually use and explained that less and less is available and it might disappear soon, she didn't say anything else. With all the "junk" in the bucket these days, I'm thinking that I better keep buying for now since the lead content is already down to 50% and I'm afraid it will soon disappear entirely!

Congrats, just smelted a similar score. Seems like a lot of work but for now I'll keep doing it when I can.

I've got about that many pounds out in the garage waiting to get smelted down. Looks like March is going to be too rainy for such an activity, but I hope to get em melted down sooner than later.

I'm just beginning to cast my own and began acquiring some wheel weights this week. After sorting through all the junk, I ended up with 135# of clip ons and about another 25 of stick on. I probably dug out another 40# of junk. It was a good bit of work sorting out the iron and zinc. I'm wondering how much I'll have when I melt it down and scoop out the clips.
Two of the shops gave me the weights and one wanted $20 for about 40#. I got him down to $15 and I suspect most of that batch was junk.
I've yet to do my first melt so wish me luck.

Today I melted and cast about 150 pounds of clip on wheel weights I have had for years.
Still have a few pounds to do tomorrow, went to purchasing the 92-6-2 alloy locally but thought I would use up the wheel weights to clean up the storage area.
Used wheel weights years back but now will use up what I have and go back to the purchase of the No. 2 alloy.

Thats a Good Score. At that price you still did ok. Sorting is not that bad. Just dump them out in a pile, pick something to start with and go to sorting. I start with the trash, then go to the stick-ons, then the iron. The Zinc is the hardest to pick out so I save them for last. They seem to be easier to see if theres not as much other stuff in there.. I usually find more iron than zinc which is a good thing. Sipping on a beer helps!

I'll sure be glad when the cost of scrap metal goes back up, probably have over a hundred pounds of Fe weights and steel clips. Maybe I should just swap it for lead and be done with it.

when gas got expensive and the percentage of junk increased I took the same approach. I bought a ton of alloy and will be set for life. I have my own range so most of what I shoot can be reclaimed. And I have a known and consistent alloy.

A ton of alloy? Hmmm.....that wouldn't last very long for me. I shoot at least 6 pounds of shot every week plus 5-7 pounds of boolits. That's only 3 years. Yeah! I do a lot of polluting........

I've hoarded lead WWs for over 50 years and still can't pass one up at an intersection.
While it may never totally disappear, the free buckets of all lead WWs are already a distant memory.
New casters had better hurry to build a stash. Today's high price may seem like a bargain in not too distant the future.

I am lucky I worked for tire shops for twenty years got weights for free. Been working in a machine shop for the last twenty years started casting boolets about two years ago had two buckets left all lead .They did not last long I cast for 9mm 10mm .45acp 9x18. Wife works for a tire shop answering phones and doing paper work. Manager was selling weights for fifty bucks a five gallon bucket. I get all the weights for free .

I get 1-2 buckets per month from my local tire shop. My stash of smelted lead just broke 1000 lbs. 1003.5 to be exact and that isn't counting 26 protein powder jugs full of already cast boolits. With my boolit trap I get most of it back when I shoot. My goal is at least 2 tons. If I live that long.

Wow. You must be pretty satisfied with your alloy mix to have cast out to 26 jugs of boolits!

I scored two bucket of wheel weights today. The first was a huge bucket that took two big guys to pick up and put in the truck. There was at least 175 pounds or more in it but I had to pay $100 for it. The other bucket I got, after picking out the trash had 65# of coww and 60# of soww. I got that bucket for $20, a much better deal. I threw in a box of remanufactured ammo and the guy was ecstatic.

I check the Gaylord boxes every day at work for lead. Lots of zinc wheel weights lately.

Wow. You must be pretty satisfied with your alloy mix to have cast out to 26 jugs of boolits! Mostly just .45s. A few of .44 and even less .30.
I'm just addicted to casting. Love watching that silver stream. About 2% pewter in .44s and .30s. Plain COWW for .45.
