Is there any particular reason folks don't seem to use new wheel weights other than price.
For that matter, where would you buy them,?

It just strikes me that paying for any lead is just a waste of money. Right now I have a 5 gallon bucket of wheel weights and a 20lb bar of lead from some hospital construction locally, all of it for free. As for where to get new wheel weights, they typically get them from wherever they get their tire lube and valve stems I would imagine.

A person can buy new wheel weights.
As long as I can get them free, I will save my cash. I have found, at your local tire dealership, a six pack opens a lot of doors.
I rountinely get five gallon pails of WWs. They stink, are dirty, are full of valve stems, papers, drinking cups.
Worth every ounce though.
The stick on WWs, are pure lead. The longer wheel weights have some zinc.
I melt my WWs real hot, and use borax as primary flux. A lot of alloy metals stick to the borax. After making ingots, I remelt the bars. This time I use beeswax. I weigh out 9lbs WW and add 3/4lb tin. I then remelt the whole thing altogether, and reingot. So far, I have gotten a lot of consistent castings.
I found an old cast iron soup pot. Makes a great lead crucible.

I weigh out 9lbs WW and add 3/4lb tin.

That would be between 2 and 4% antimony, and more than 7% tin. The literature says that will not be a good bullet alloy: too much tin.

if that is a 3/4 lb of 50/50 it would be allright.
the old mix was 9lb ww, 1lb 50/50 to get close to lyman no2 back in the 70's and early 80's.

I like remelting my WW alloy but add no more than 1% tin for good fill out.

I have made Lyman #2 with adding linotype to WW alloy but found that for wheel guns ...... WW and 1% tin is plenty hard enough and much less expensive.

I am reserving the lino for (future) faster rifle loads.

Straight WW, good quality lube, proper fit to throat. Good fill out and no leading.
