Does anyone have any Feedback on forming 25/35 correctly from 30/30 . Correctly meaning No dent, wrinkles. and other defects.. I have annealed, brought the neck dow . The Last Push to the base Is always the problem.
Thanks

I made 219 Zippers from 30-30 and 25-35 is my intermediate step just after a 7-30 Waters die. It has been a while since I have made any Zippers, fairly certain I did not anneal until they were fully formed. On a small percentage I did get some small dents in the Zippers but they fired out. I made these on a Hornady Projector press (5) station progressive. Try a 7-08 / 6.5 x 55 die or some other shorter case with neck in that diameter as an intermediate step.

Make certain the 30-30's do not have any nicks or imperfections near the mouth they will magnify as you neck down. I usually remove my expander ball when forming cartridges.

I've tried it with the dies I had on hand. Large percentage of wrinkles so when I saw some new cases I bought them.

I've had the best luck forming .25-35 cases from Winchester .30-30 brass. I used Imperial Sizing Die Wax and the die spacer which comes with RCBS .38/.357 dies to back off the FL sizer for the first pass. This decaps and partially forms the neck and shoulder, without finishing the case taper.

After pre-forming, case necks are gas annealed. Then you can full-length resize in a second die pass without buckling the shoulder. Cases then must be trimmed to length. Lee can provide a .25-35 case length trim gage to use with their .30-30 cutter and lock stud. You won't need to ream case neck. As long as brass is formed in two stages with an inter-draw anneal between you don't lose any. If you try this with heavier walled Remington or Federal brass you WILL wrinkle the shoulders on about half of the cases. Wrinkled shoulders work once for hunting loads which you “Pop and Toss,” but develop pin holes if reloaded repeatedly.

The best way I found is to run the 30-30 brass into a 32-40 sizing die first to get the correct tapper (remove neck expanding plug). Then resize in the 25-35 die. I got less neck wrinkles doing it that way.

That makes perfect sense! Can you then do without the anneal? And if so, howa do the cases last?

I use the 25-35 die as the first step to forming 22 HP. I do not seem to have much trouble getting the cases down to 25-35 but the final step to 22HP is a bit problematic. I think next time I will try using the 32-40 die first. I have had the best luck with forming from Federal brass.

I only used new brass and didn't anneal, fired brass may need to be annealed though. Case life was good as I only shot mild cast loads.

I make .219 Zipper cases, 25-35 cases are the easiest. Starting from 30-30, I start with a 7-30 trim die shortened to put the shoulder to the 25-35 length then into a 25-35 trim die, then .219 Zipper FL die. Even with this I was getting wrinkled brass and losing brass at the 25-35 stage, worse at .219 sizing. I finally dumped the Imperial sizing wax and use RCBS pump spray. Here are some Pics of fully annealed 30-30 at the 25-35 stage, I wiped the lube from neck & shoulder before the 25-35 trim sizing, the 4 on the left were not cleaned of lube.

I've been forming 22 Hi Power or in my case 5.6x52R from 30-30 but have trouble because the diameter just forward of the rim is too large. 30-30,s are .416 and 5.6x52,s are .413 or so . 25-35,s work better as they are smaller in that area. Would the 32-40 die size that area down to .413?
Guess I could shorten the die until it did. Now I have to find a 32-40 sizer die.

I got some formed .25-35 cases made from .30-30 in a trade. Half of them were neck turned and worked well in my Savage 99. The other half didn't fit when a bullet was seated and had to be neck turned before use.

A set of .25 Remington case forming dies seem to work fine. Once sized in the .25 Rem trim die FL size in a .25-35 die.

A 6.5 Jap trim or FL die properly set might get you there too.

Unscrew the die a few turns and size the case, screw the die in a half turn and run the case up and down. Do another half turn and run it up and down again. Repeat as necessary.
