I have been thinking about casting my own deer slugs. Do they need to be pure lead, soft lead or can they be as hard a linotype? Are there better shapes than others? Are there molds for rifled slugs?

This is a new area for me to cast for and I have little experience, except for buying ammo, and once in a while loading 12 gauge.

:castmine:

Thanks,

Jerry

Lyman recommends pure lead in their literature (I think) but I believe a customer service rep told me pure WW were soft enough.

I've used a roughly 50/50 pure PB/WW mixture with reasonable success. Forget the actual load, but it was with Blue Dot, the Lyman Sabot Slug, forget the wad, Remington case, and W209 primer. Shooting a Mossberg 835 with rifled barrel, cantilever scope.

I've not been on this project for a while though, need to dust it off, maybe this weekend.
