Need help---303

Guys---- I hope u can help me--have (2) 303's and bullets tumble badly--I have sluged bore --- did not get a good measurement but from what i can tell it seems (big) have tried 312 GC bullets and 313 GC and 314 GC lubed with felix lube---The bore has to be larger than 314---only time I saw them start to fly right is after about 10 rounds and with a light load. Has anyone had luck with fillers for this type of situation (bore being large) was told that a filler like (cream of wheat) could help the gases from escaping past the bullet can anyone help with this problem----Jacketed bullets of 311 dia. shoot fine just recieved some 170 gr 312 jacketed---cant wait to try them---rifle is clean and bore shines--but the lands seem to be scored runing with the land itself. rifle is a P-14 and the other is a smily. mark-3--- the 2 bullets I tried where 180s and 214s--180s sized 312 and 313---214s sized 314 ---bullets are hard----:sad:

You indicate the boolits are hard. If it was me, I'd try the largest diameter I could of a flat base design with a softer alloy. The boolits would bump up to bore dimensions and be a bit more accurate. Your velocity will have to be a bit slower for the softer alloy, but that shouldn't be a problem unless you hunt furry things with teeth in the tall grass.

Your difficulty with measuring your slug suggests that both your Enfields are five groove. I have come close enough by lapping out a 5/16" hole drilled in a piece of steel until the slug barely passed through, then measuring the inside diameter of the hole. if you are a member of the Cast Bullet Association there is another member who has the special mikes to measure odd number of groove barrels.

I had a 303 that went a full 317 in the grooves with a bright shiney bore. My largest bullet cast 315 and a pinch and keyholed badly in this gun. I finaly went to cream of wheat filler and the gun settled in and actuall shot under 3" at 100 yards. This was with 12.5 of Red Dot and COW to the base of the seated bullet. You might also want to try the LEE 155 mould lapped out to drop at about 314. This bullet has proven very accurate in 303's that tumbled just about any other bullet of like diameter. I also sized some 324 bullets down to 317 and had real good luck with them.

I can supply some .316 diameter 311291's to play with lubed with FWFL.

I have a 1945 LongBranch with a bright 2 groove barrel. I have also been unable to slug the barrel. I have tried three or four times, but the slug jump out of the grooves and skitters down the lands. The lands are .305.

I went out once with both 311291 and SAECO 325 sized .313. I used 17 grains of 4759 and enough PSB to give light compression. I got nice round 1.5" 50 yards groups. It should do better than that with some development.

I now have a .315 sizing die and will play with it some more this season. I also have a bette rear sight on the rifle now. That should help as well.

Try the shoot slug method. I take about 1.5 to 2.0 grs of Bullseye and shoot the bullet into a big bundle of rags. You may have to adjust the powder up or down or even use a different fast pistol powder, but I get real good slug this way and so do others.

I like this method because I can see a more detailed view of how the lands are worn than I do with a pounded slug.

An easy way to measure slugs from barrels w/odd numbered lands is to wrap the bullet with shim stock...say two thousandths. Cut a strip about bullet height and a couple inches long. Place the bullet in the middle and pinch the ends together, mike it, then subtract double the thickness of the shim stock. Gives you a fairly accurate reading.

Kenjuudo--- I see 2 dif. types---both .316 dia.-----what weight are they -- Im thinking about 180 grs.---loaded some tonight and will try them tomorow--weather permitting---trying 25 grs. of AA 5744---Boolits look good--keep em in the black
