View Full Version : Where Do All the Federal Gold Medal Match Primers Go? Also: 338 Federal Load Data

Federal Gold Medal Match Primers: For the last 2-3 years I have been looking for them in stock from any retailer I can find. Why? Just because I would like to try them.

But no one seems to have them in stock. Does anyone know of a reloading supplier who tends to have them available?

And why are they so scare? Finally, who is gobbling up the ones that are put on the shelf? Competition shooters maybe?

Kind of an idle question. But once in my life I would like to try them.

On a more serious note, the following chart may help someone who is working up a load for their 338 Federal. It was developed using the Lee Class Powder Measure and the Reduced Load Calculator found on Handloads.com.

The Lee VDM chart that comes with the measure states that their data is an estimate. I found in calculating the VDM for the powders listed below that they are indeed estimates. I calculated the VDM using at least five samples and using the average.

If you wish to use the data below with your Lee Classic Measure, I urge you to get out the calculator, do the math and determine the exact VDM for the powder you have in your possession. I hope you, or someone you know finds this helpful, at least as a starting point for load development.

Try Bruno's Shooters Supply in Phoenix. He caters to the Benchrest crowd and has them most of the time. If he can't fix you up, try RW Hart in Nescpoeck Pa. Both of these guys are standup folks to do business with.

Haven't seen any in quite awhile myself, other than pistol primers.

Here in Wisconsin I can find them at "Mills Fleet Farm" from time to time. I don't know if you have that chain over in MI, good luck.

l know where 3000 are, but sadly Michigan is a long way from Augusta Ga...lt would have been NO PROBLEM a few years ago because every Summer l would travel to Kalamazoo from Fort Gordon. Meet up with a Signal Unit of Michigan National Guard, then go play in the woods at Camp Grayling. Retirement ends such frivolous jaunts tho. Regretfully missed, esp when Uncle Sam is picking up the tab

I was looking for them myself last week for a shooting buddy while I was on a business trip. Hit up practically every gunstore in Utah, and nearly every one had Federal Gold Match Primers - in Large Pistol only...
Rifle match primers must be going somewhere, or they are simply not making them.

I've seen them on Gunbroker at decent prices at times.
