View Full Version : Closed:8mm SIL Group Buy is Here!!!!!!!!!!

This Group Buy is for the 8mm SIL Boolit as designed by 45 2.1.
Designed for a gas check.
As cast diameter is .326" cast of wheelweight alloy.
Weight is 197 grains as cast of wheelweight alloy.
As you will see from the picture below the nose portion is a "series of tapers designed to get the boolit centered well gradually." This boolit is a scaled up 8mm version of the modified RCBS 30-165-SIL which was a previous Group Buy that is expected back from Lee any time now.
This Group Buy will be cut in Lee Six Cavity blocks. Cost will be $62.00 per mold. That price will cover shipping to anyone in CONUS and provide a free mold to 45 2.1 for his design services. Foreign orders please add $15.00 US to cover shipping costs.
This Group Buy will run until we get 25 orders or until June 22, 2008, whichever comes first. A two week last call will be annouced at that time. If we do not have 25 orders by that date I will figure the $100 set up cost split between the buyers evenly and then notify everyone how much extra to send me for that set-up fee. Either way the order will go in to Lee.
*****SPECIAL NOTE: LEE GUARANTEES AN AS CAST DIAMETER OF DEAD ON OUR SPECS TO + .003" OVER OUR SPECS. THIS MEANS WE MAY GET MOLDS THAT CAST AT .329" ON THE BANDS. THEY ALSO DO NOT GUARANTEE THE WEIGHT TO BE PERFECT DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY CLAIM EVERYBODY'S ALLOYS & CASTING METHODS MAY BE DIFFERENT. WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEND THE MOLDS BACK TO LEE FOR A RE-CUT IF THEY CAST AT .327" TO .329" OR IF THEY DON'T WEIGH EXACTLY 197 GRAINS.
What this means is if you can't live with a boolit that will have to be sized down a couple thousandths don't send me your order. The reality here is that the Group Buys coming back from Lee recently are dropping from the molds anywhere from dead on to .002" over; with most being on the money or .001" over spec'd diameter. Weight has also been very close to what we have been asking for.
PM me here at Cast Boolits for my address to send payment if you would like to get in on this Group Buy.

Can I lube this bullet with Lee Alox? I am kind of new to casting and not familiar with the different styles of lube groves. I use Lee sizing dies so sizing/lubing options are limited for me. I sure would like a 6 banger 8mm mold!

I apologize for not responding to your question sooner. While I have never used Lee Liquid Alox personally; I have read on this board info posted by other members who have used LLA on boolits with conventional lube grooves with quite a bit of success.
Hope this helps,:-D

I am interested in such a bullet for a semi-auto in 8x57 with incredibly forceful feeding. I believe a crimp would be useful. Does this bullet have a crimp groove? If not, would a 8x57 Lee factory crimp die work with it?

No crimp groove, but the Lee factory crimp die usually keeps things more than firm enough in everything i've used them with.

Um, is anyone feeling like this is ground hog day with the bumps? over and over and (Lee) over again. Dutch 4122, I hate to bug, but have you heard anything from Lee lately?
Curt
Not trying to be a jerk here; But it seems I can't say it enough times. Lee does not, and has never called or mailed anybody with an update on the status of their custom order. Asking me if I've "heard anything from Lee lately" is going to get the same response back from me every time. No, I haven't heard from Lee lately; and I wont' "hear" anything from Lee until I come home one day and find the boxes with our order on my porch.
Lee expects us to send them our money and wait. Others who have ran these group buys have been told by management at Lee that if they continue to call about their order it will be shifted to the back of the line. Then their are those who have claimed recently to have called Lee and been given a rough idea of how many orders are ahead of theirs.
Now, put yourself in my shoes. Would you be calling them about the status of the order and risk having it shifted to the back of the line? They have already proven that they are not taking these Group Buys and producing them in order.
I'm just as frustrated as anybody else. [smilie=b:

Matt, Thanks for the update (and for taking the heat on this one)! Frankly, I'm not pleased with Lee's "business model" either, but they may be overwhelmed by demand (fears of gun & component bans) and their own mistakes on Group Buy molds, namely dimensional errors.

Sorry Dutch, I didn't mean to go the wrong way on the question. I apologise and hope you accept it. I have heard that Lee threatens to move orders to the back of the line for inquiring about them, but I didn't realize it was for real. All of us appreciate you honchoing this group buy and being the point man for it. You helped me to realize that your spot isn't a cool place when the supplier (Lee) takes this long. Anyway, lets' get through this and move on to the next project.

I measured 6 boolits from a perfect drop. All mic out between .326" - .327" and are less than .001" out of round.
This design falls out of the block simply with a twist of the wrist and no "handle banging."
Weights are running between 201-203 grains, cast of wheelweight with 1% tin added. Gas checks are a snap on fit for all six cast from my mold. Noses are tapered as close to specs as I can measure!

Oh boy and oh brother.
Well, the mold arrived on Saturday, (Thanks Dutch 4122). Anyway, I started casting a few after cleaning and smoking the cavities. They are coming out in a range of 197 to 200 grains
and just touching in at .326 in (8.30 mm). This is with a straight wheel weight cast mix.
All good right? I was camming the lever on what would have been my 100th bullet, and the arm broke off just past where the bolt goes through for it to pivot on. Looking at the steel, it really appears to be crystallized. I don't know how else to describe it. It just has that silvery grainy look in the break and it really broke like it was glass. No cam lever distortion or anything. The mold was just warming up good, the bullets were not even doing any "frosting".
So here is the dilemma, do I just swap cams from another 6 cavity and keep cranking and send the broken part to Lee, do I send the whole mold in with the cast bullets still inside?
Or some variation on that theme? I hate to send the whole mold back. It is casting what I want that I have had for less than 72 hours. Suggestions please.
I will try to post some pictures in a bit.
