Spent the last 2 weekends blowing holes through bone in hams and capturing the results.

This was shot from a Snub Nose S&W Airweight 649 with 6.3gr of HS-6

I tried many different loads in different guns and with different alloys. I'm still a big fan of flat point and round nose for penetration, but also wanted to find the sweet spot for some of these hollow points I've been casting.

This was from a batch of 15lbs of SOWW and 5lbs COWW + 2% tin. BBDT with Smoke's Flame Red. BHN measured from my Lee was 9.7

Just thought I'd share since it looks so good.

Here's a couple more fired from a 5" Barrel 357 Magnum. All 3 were the same boolit. The divot tip. Not a full hollow point. Not sure exactly what the official name of it would be so I just call it a divot.

All 3 were on top of 14gr of Alliant 2400.

The one on the far left was from that same batch of softer lead. The Powder Coat didn't hold up and it leaded the **** out of my barrel.

The 2 on the right are from a different batch of lead. 3:1 in the opposite direction. 15lbs of COWW + 5lbs of SOWW + 2% tin.

The Green one was air cooled and has a BHN of 10.7. The Red was water quenched and has a BHN of 13. Both held up and didn't lead my barrel and expanded quite well IMO.

Both hit a little bit of bone on their way through.

The pin is called a cup point. The expansion of the penta point is spot on :)

Try putting enough material in front of the ham to equal a winter coat and clothing, and see if the bullet penetrates as far as the meat.

We did that. Usually the tips clog and you get no expansion and extremely deep penetration.

Do you know what the velocity on the .38 snub load was? I haven't cast with it yet, but I have the Lyman Devastator mold designed for 9mm, if it casts big enough, it's gonna get used in various .38 revolvers.

Very nice results, thanks for sharing your write up. When I had a contact at the meat market/slather house we shot hundreds of beef and pork shoulders, leaned a lot used roles carpet to simulate heaven clothing. Never used the dish or cup points in a revolver buy was very impressed by them from 9mm both cast and some of the old light federal jacketed. If you wanna learn what your metal does to meat, put metal on meat, it's about as close as we can get without killing thousands of animals.

That's impressive looking expansion. I have always thought the penta pins looked cool, but did not realize they could give these kind of results.

That is a hell of a good idea. I'd read somewhere a while back that the problem with HP handgun bullet's was that going through clothing material, they tend to plug up and not expand at all. Someone, I think it was Hornady or Speer came out with a HP filled with some kind of stuff like that and fixed the problem. Have to try that on my 38cal 155gr KT HP's. They don't expand very well.

It's definitely true. We basically simulated a human thigh by wrapping the pig shoulder in denim followed by a bunch of clothing, about a foot to be exact. Then about a foot of hard cover books.

Right out the gate we found almost all of our HP's would clog with denim. Softer one's may or may not expand, but harder one's would clog every time.

We then changed up and just went from Ham, to Denim and clothes to books. From there we'd get good expansion and usually find the boolits lodged fairly shallow in the clothes. Flat points would usually make it through most of the clothes and sometimes get back into the books. Round nose would always be fun to see just how far into the books they'd go.

We also did some testing with Gallon Jugs of water > Books. The water put significantly more force on the hollow points and when they hit the books they really got shredded. We'd be picking out bits and chunks. We then tested Gallon Jugs > Clothes > Books. This yielded much better results. The water would expand the boolit and the clothes would slow them down just enough so that when they hit the books they were still mostly in tact.

I'll have to try the silicone sealant in my 10MM loads may make for a fine hunting load for pigs!

Especially if they are wearing denim jackets. 😛

Come on, give us a clue as far as velocity, please?

When you guys check the RTV would you please post a new thread about it?

Velocity is going to be 850-950fps since it's a heavy boolit in a 38 special.

The load was 6.7gr of HS-6

You can look up load data for that with a 158gr boolit and get pretty close. I've not put this particular load on a chrono to know for certain.

rototerrier, that 359640 penta is perfection. I have the 360640, but never tried the penta pins. But I'll be trying them now that I see what's possible!
