View Full Version : What's the BHN of 50/50 WW-Pb?

Can anyone give me an educated guess on this mix? I was thinking that would be an easy mix for 45-70 BP boolits if it came out soft enough.

Ian, I'll make a SWAG at 9 to 10 Brinell. Have you tried to just anneal WW bullets? Should come out about the same.

I cast straight WW for my 45-70 and anneal them in the oven at 400 degrees for an hour, then allow them to air cool. I'm not sure the BNH, but they work just fine for BPCR loads.

I've heard about that, in fact, it was on the list of things to try. I have an unused toaster oven that I can dedicate to it. I was leary of doing that in the kitchen oven for fear of lead migration to unintended things.

I made some bullets some time ago using an alloy of 1-1 (ww-lead). I did add an 8” piece of tin/antimony solder to a 5 pound batch to help with bullet fill-out. Anyhow the BHN was right at 7.5 according to my SAECO tester. I actually though it would be less, but it wasn’t. Hope this info helps…BCB

Waksupi: I'll go along with a bhn 9-10 too. The ww's I've checked in the last few years been a a bhn 12. ben1025

i have tried 50% ww with 50% pb and water dropped them for a 15 bernell hardness.

I was using 50/50 with a little tin added for fill out, and got 9 BHN air cooled.

Quenched, they came out 16.

Ian,

Life can be pretty simple. What gets me is how people actually measure to get a true 50/50. Guestimation rules the day. So I have seen between 6 and 9 depending on molding and cooling conditions.

Send me a couple bullets in the mail, and I will make a .... better guess. :grin:
