I ran out of H-4895, been using 29 grains of H-4895 under NOE's 326471fn in my 8 x 57. I'm not pushing them very hard. I have plenty of IMR 4895. Do I need to drop back at all? First chance I get, I'll get a 8# of H-4895. Thanks, Flyer

Don't have any experience with the IMR flavor, but my sweet spot has always been between 29 and 32 grains of the h4895 in the 8mm. Had great luck with it in 7.62x54 and 30-30 as well. Not at my shop now or I'd gladly cross reference some loading manuals for you. If no one comes along with your answer by tomorrow evening pm me and I'll do some looking for ya.

With the NOE 326471 my groups open up when I go higher than 29 grains of H-4895? Yesterday I moved much closer(.028) to the lands of my barrel, still need to explore that setting more, to see if it matters? THANKS for your help Nagantguy!

You should be okay at 29 gr. I load the 'H' and 'IMR' varieties pretty much interchangeably with cast in my milsurps - 29.5 gr of either 4895 under a Lee 329-205 sized to .325 in the 8x57s - but, for jacketed, I back off a half gr. or so from my IMR load when using H4895 in the .308 to obtain the same velocity.

I believe that H4895 is a little faster burning then IMR-4895 and most load books show using a smaller charge of that powder. I am going from memory and you should check the Hodgdon reloading site for actual min.-max. charges of both powders.

Greetings
Whenever changing any component in a load it is prudent to drop at least 5% and work back up. My body parts have far more value than a mere 10-15 rounds of ammo. Even just loading 3 rounds each as you increase back to whatever load will give you a good idea what is going on in that chamber.

IME the imr type is slower than the H-type.
well the new H-type.
the older smaller grained [not green stuff] in the cardboard boxes was a bit slower and more dense powder, it metered better too.
I use the IMR brand 99.5+% of the time and I'm slowly burning up the rest of the H-type in some 30-30 duplicating type loads in the old 31 cal rifles.

I had them all once: surplus 4895, IMR, Hodgdon, and Accurate and didn't see a hill of beans difference between them all that made a difference. That's been a while back and things have changed today.

I load 36gr IMR4895 with an Accurate 210 gr gas checked boolit, I seat with the gas check base flat with the neck. I've gotten a 2.7" group at 350yds with a cheap-o 2-7x scout mounted scope.
I slowly worked loads up to 40gr but I found that 100-200 yard accuracy drops off greatly after 37 gr (worked up at a 75yd range before). No pressure signs from 36-40gr, extraction always smooth and easy. Only difference was recoil, and I'm pretty sure if I rub my shoulder in the right place I can STILL feel the steel buttplate the one time I didn't hold her right...
What rifle are you loading for? semi auto or bolt action?
