I recently picked up a couple of new contender pistol barrels, a 14 inch 41 magnum and a 10inch 10MM. I am trying to decide which to keep for my annual close range deer hunting fun.

Any input on the comparison of these 2 ?

I kind of think the 10MM is a replacement for the .45 acp. It can be loaded with about 170 grain bullets and will still be slower and LESS power full than the .41 Mag. Which can be loaded to nearly .44 mag ballistics. bullets as heavy as 260 grains can be loaded in the .41. My .41 barrel is only 10" and surprises ME on the power it can generate. Do you want a fast 40 or a glorified self defense gun?

sorry but the 10mm is anything but a 45acp. 45 is a 21kpsi load and the 10mm is a 32kpsi load...not even close in comparrison. do some research.....not even close.

the 10 inch with a 180 sierra hp is about 1400 fps with a max load of aa9.
the 41 with its 36kpsi limit is 1900 fps with a 170 sierra witha 100% pressure load of aa9 or about 1790 in a 10 inch for comparison.

so the choice is really up to you. the 10 mm allows you to load down to 135's and up to 210 or so.
limited bullets in 41.
think either will get the job done.

I've had a super 14 barrel for the 41 Mag since they came out. A extremely accurate barrel which can easily shoot MOA groups. Hitting is no problem with it. It is the downrange energy you will have to consider. Put a good scope on it and go hunting.

You say "close range" so I'm thinking by that you mean 50yds or less in which case I believe either will do with a proper HUNTING boolit. I used to have a Colt Delta Gold Cup that was very accurate even though I never got the hang of semis compared to my personal preferance of a wheelgun but were talking Contenders here. Do you have the capability at this point to load for them both and make a comparison?? Then you could base your decision on accuracy out of the two barrels you have. I have a Smith 657 in 41 mag and it loves Hornady 210 XTP's accurate and powerful. I want to try some cast boolits but am just trying to get this game going, but am sure a cast boolit will completely penetrate a whitetail broadside at 50yds and further but not sure how much further.(100yds??). My personal choice would be the 41mag but that does not mean it is the best choice for you.Heck, if you don't need the money you invested keep them both shoot them and take a deer with each.

Shot the 41 mag a little today. It has a sillouette rear sight on it, that has to go if I am going to hunt with it. Have not tried the 10MM yet.
